Developer Insight: The Divination Card Creation Process

Hi

100% Agreed Charan.

Feel free to explain why 'Rain of Chaos' gives only one chaos orb then. Fairly sure you guys know what 'rain' means.

Did Jozen specifically request just one orb for 8 cards, and insist it be called 'rain'? Really curious about that one.

Oh, and The Alpha's Howl card art is *terrible*. Yes, in most cases you struck a fine balance between stylistic and truly artistic, but in that case, it looks like a fucking doodle. Were I the supporter behind that I'd be like 'uhm, 1.1k for that? Seriously?'

Anyway, good job sucking a lot of money out of folks for *far* less dev work than required for the cheaper (and now obviously defunct, at least openly) custom unique design pack. Better than the farce that was Grandmasters, at least.

If anyone asks me if this is worth it, I say if they don't have their own unique to promote/work with or some personal message (as with The Lover -- so sad!), probably not. 1.1k USD to fill out a submission form with like, four options and *maybe* get a few messages back and forth with a faceless dev (probably Nick) regarding 'compromise'?

Nope. Not that GGG I supported so heavily and happily.

Rain of chaos SO BANG ON, LOVE THE IRONING OF THIS CARD FOR 1.1K
GGG has become quite bleeding sow, every update isn't an update as much as its an attempted mask to hide the real issue underneath, even this last while GGG has produced lots of MTXs it feels like GGG is saying ''eat cake'', even though even the MTX's STILL CLIP. These cards are a great idea but as usual someone is playing it TOO SAFE and messing up a new feature for POE, as usual, by being super timid with drops that it really only adds more crap to clutter ones stash and else chance of getting an actual orb drop.

The true goal in POE should be the craft and have fun, not endless grind with an even more abysmal useful item curve for your character so in the end it isn't your build that fails its the equipment you have been using more often then naught.

cheers with your POE-GI-OH!

I kind of agree. I supported PoE since CB, and have gotten great support from them throughout the years with all kinds of things, my account hacked is a huge one, and a name change is a lesser one. But in all of my cases (Including nice messages on my closed beta T-shirt), I felt like I've really gotten something in return for my devotion, be it in time or in money.

I've really gotten a good support about whats going on. Compare that to this supporter pack, it's been over a month now and I have gotten as you say, 2-3 returns about compromise.

I get that they have been super-busy and I hope the pace will pick up. If it does not, they should stop telling people to buy packs, or atleast tell them that the card may very well be 1-2months away. Just my experience.

Love the game, will return for every leauge. // Sparowes

That pretty much summed up my experience with the Div card process. After my card went live and I was able to find it and where it dropped specifically, I was severely disappointed. My e-mails to GGG about it resulted in responses along the line of "It's working as intended" and "we can't tell you anything else". I had specifically asked as part of the design process that it have as many cards as possible so as to be like alteration shards for chaos orbs. I followed what was on the div card page and chose something with a pretty low rarity so that the card would be a common drop. I expected it to drop in multiple zones like Carrion Crow; instead it drops in Cruel and Merc Crossroads and the Village Ruins map. What that means is that the card pretty much never gets completed. No-one is going to farm Crossroads for a single chaos.

Hey look on the bright side at least your card is done.

My art work - that I can't see - has been completed about a month ago and it's been radio silence since then.

Maybe Chris personally managed my card's progress and since he's on vacation it's postponed until he returns!

I can’t buy any more big supporter packs because the forum only supports showing 7 legacy tags.

This is pretty much EXACTLY my worry. I am worried that if I come up with a good idea for a card (similar to chaos shards for example) that could be great that the drop rate will completely defeat the purpose. This is why I am trying to make my experience more about the card itself but GGG does not want to rock the boat on functionality. On one hand, I completely get that they want the cards to be easy to understand with ZERO variation on functionality...but on the other hand, that makes it VERY limited in what the supporters can help do.

So, so far i have yet to find more then one complete set, and i am ok with that.

How ever i really wonder are the cards for hard core players that want to farm for nearly hrs upon hrs?

or for players that play casual and have a chance to build nice items as well ?

in any case i don't think i will be selling any of mine or trading them in since i want to collect them.

last question WHEN DO WE GET TO BUY THE PHYSICAL COPIES OF THEM ???? Muhahaha can't wait...

Jozen, so was the card a reference to Warcraft 3?

No, not at all. I liked the name Reign of Chaos over Rain of Chaos because it sounds the same but has more meaning behind it. Plus it went better with the flavor text. I started playing Magic when I was nine year olds, back when Revised had just came out. So when I started playing PoE, chaos orbs always made me think of: http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=chaos+orb

So when GGG announced Divination Cards I knew I wanted to make a card about: http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=chaos+confetti

Which is itself a nod to a story(several paragraphs down): http://archive.wizards.com/Magic/magazine/article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/feature/115

Divination cards are ok imho. The droprate of most isn't broken imho. The only card I find really underwhelming is lucky connexion. It is basically designed to be source of fusings, except you can't farm those to make fusing, hence fusing come from alts and pier/warf are line maps that aren't really well doted in terms of density/clearspeed. Also the card never droped in something like 100ish runs in alched maps in warbands.

Else I have seen other cards drop at their imho somehow logical droprate +-.
So, tell me, how come I have all of these cards:

(+ a carrion crow set I delivered), yet never got a single Metalsmith Gift, a card that gives a WHITE EASY TO OBTAIN ITEM and requires 6 cards to deliver.
I've done the places where it drops some 15+ times between characters (not counting races if they drop in such), not a single card drop...

I think its fanastic you have a love in the card game and this has made you excited, hope it will give you much satisfaction.
Just my 2 cents, i think the 'rain of chaos' is awesome along with the text however, i think you should get like '8' chaos not '1' chaos then that would suit the text better. To balance just make the cards harder to find? IF you dont like the idea of these cards being more rare or you intended 1 chaos, maybe reign of chaos would work better, which leads to my next input-

TBH i love the idea of collecting rare cards during my farms, i like the idea of stashing some rare cards and getting a gold mine out of it eventually. Far over then getting constant crappy cards like the lover which may drop 1-5 per map and i just dont get excited... its just more sorting for me = more work :/

What are other peoples thoughts? Most people will probably disagree and thats fine lol.

Path of exile is one of the best ARPGS created/ Died 25 times to 1 boss in Path of Exile and would rip again.
I love the idea behind the cards, and since 1 stash tab has 144 slots on it the "omg wasted stash space" people can shut it.

What I find exceedingly silly is that I've found 108 uniques in Warbands so far and 52 cards. The unique drop rate feels awesome. Most I don't use (a decent portion of those I could if I wished to build for them, I just choose not to), but a couple I am using.

Then there's the cards. 52 total. Four sets: The Scholar, The Carrion Crow, The Gemcutter, and The Flora's Gift. Take away those drops and I've found 24 cards.

I have 2 Warbands characters, one is level 79 and the other is level 78. The card drop rate feels abysmal.
