They are the strongest defensive option, although using the statues right next to the arena waypoint is an easier option since they usually never die, and the evangelists die from time to time which can be annoying to resummon. Nothing beats evangelists at keeping your character alive though, their defensive bubble can help a ton.

Does the unique jewel Hidden Potential work with minions? Since gear isn't as important in this build, and minion damage is a lot harder to come by it seems like this would be a great build to incorporate some blue items for the %damage increase it could (potentially) apply to the minions.

If it doesn't specifically state minion damage it shouldn't work, and even if it did work, a good 16% minion damage + cast speed jewel would be better and wouldn't have you sacrificing rare items.
