This is likely the best topic for a reply,
If I understand this properly ~ gem slot chains allow active skills in the chain to be enhanced by the support gems in the chain. However if you have a 5chain link ~ if you place 2 active skills in the item do they both gain the benifits of the 3 left over slots filled with support gems? Some people seem to have placed support gems standalone. Are some support gems like "MagicFind" simply a passive, or are they levelnig the gem and the "MagicFind" bonus is actually only applied to kills with the skill its linked too? Chaos Is Life, Life Is Chaos, Control Is An Illusion. Thanks Maetaphor for my Beta Key :) Last edited by Ledrif#3063 on Jan 9, 2012, 1:05:50 PM

"Yes, both skills gain the benefits of the support gems. "I haven't come across support gems that are passives. I don't know any that's named MagicFind (are you referring to D2?). What I know is Rare Item Drop. That's definitely bound to a skill. I put support gems into isolated slots to level them, too. There are many ways to die, but only one way to live!

I was referring to rare item drop. They are basicly the same mechanic.
If it is localized on the skill itself then I take it atkspeed and the like are also linked to the skill, although they wouldnt effect too much. Increasing the atkspeed of cleave lets you do your next action slightly quicker.(not as strong as true atkspeed). And thanks for the fine details :) Chaos Is Life, Life Is Chaos, Control Is An Illusion.

There are no passive support gems. Support gems such as 'Increased Item Rarity' only provide their benefit to monsters killed using the supported skill. It's very common for players to place gems into unused sockets to level them.
