[1.3.1] Tri-Element Equilibrium Trapper (budget atziri's killer)
This is good stuff. I picked up a sunblast but I can't afford to lose my resistances at the moment so I'll have to compensate with switching up jewelry. I also switched out to a 5L with more spell damage, ele damage and multiplier. I dumped EE for now. It was kind of a headache anyway with avoiding any and all gear with "adds fire/cold/lightning damage" mods in it. I'm down to 450 ES so stuff hurts. I'm around 3200 life after switching up my tree per the suggestion from dpchaos.
I'm not quite there yet, but things are looking up. Shit's blowing up faster now. Fire trap tooltip gets up to 7.5k with power charges up. Still needs some work like quality gems and more tailored gear. My biggest debate is what general defensive mindset to shoot for. That's the biggest point of contention between posters in this thread and other threads right now for trappers. Seems like many in here agree to go with Acro/Phase keystones but after that... ? pure ES gear? ES/Evasion hybrid with a few evasion/ES nodes? Right now I'm more concerned with getting my life pool up as you said, but after that I'll have some choices to make. Raquinvil, I'll give your gem setups some serious consideration, although I don't have a 6L. Some of us aren't made of currency :) No ele prolif anywhere? I'm thinkin maybe you feel the multitraps compensate for that perhaps? I've already switched to shock nova multitraps by the way. I'm giving this new gem hypothermia a run. Interesting gem. At level 18 it yields a damage boost on chilled enemies of 37% PLUS the 10% chance to freeze them for even more CC. Let's keep this going...it's good dialogue all around. |

" Trappers have it hard since they they can't leech, mainly there are some points you can cover, CwDT + Immortal Call is not reliable anymore but believe me it saves alot from perma stunner Leapers/Chargers. You can run Enduring Cry, 3 End Charges = 12% phys reduction with Chaos Golem that's about 17%, then you have the AA which comes before the mitigation making it more effective, but what I use on my caster which I found pretty helpful, is to use dagger + shield with Whirling Blades + Fortify, That's 20% LESS damage taken. Also decent movement with whirling blades. Along with high HP pool ,Acro and proper flask usage , I think it's decent enough. Btw I wanted to ask you, is the Power Charge on trap trigger % viable? I mean are you always at max Pcharges uptime? Because Assassin's Mark is nice and all, but it won't give the Pcharges. |

" You can't pull the "Some of us aren't made of currency" on me! :P So far ALL my builds are projected for 4-links but still people ask me what gems after 4-link and I give them :) I saw that you had a 5-link so placed suggestions for one 5-link with a gem in "( )" aka after if you go for the 6-link. Prolif is a damage penalty with really low range, you are better of with mult traps to increase the chance of actually shocking stuff atm and high damage. Trap and mines damage gem is a MORE multiplier, just like Hypothermia, but without the "chill" requirement. The penalty on the throw speed you almost don't notice as traps are actually fast to throw compared to some spells. Regarding Acro, after you have 1/3 of your life as energy shield, for the purposes of Mind over Matter, the rest of the energy shield isn't doing almost anything. Specially since you can fast refill it with either Vall Discipline or Enduring Cry (if you follow the build I posted +-). So once at that point, where you have hard time to increase your life, evasion ratting will make your life more "efficient" and acrobatics it's just another layer of protection. Ok boys and girls. I thought I'd revisit this to keep our trapper dream's alive. My witch is now 91 and have had a couple lucky item drops as well as a couple exalts.
I've taken all your advice and applied it. I used dpchaos's skill tree suggestions. Here is where I sit now:

I got a tabula almost the moment after I clicked "submit" on my last post on this thread. I took Raq's suggestions on the gem links and even added twist to combining shock nova and snap together on a 6L with mult traps. I've recently upgraded to a 6L Regalia with decent stats via a 4 exa purchase. My tooltips on nova, snap and fire trap are 3.8k, 6.7k, 6.8k respectively. A couple notes: 1. The found that beginning with shock nova toss followed by cold snap clears most packs. Once I have power charges the nova almost always shocks the entire pack, snap finishes them off. Single fire trap for finishing off stragglers and single target dps (takes time vs. bosses but can be done). I clear 76 maps with ease and even 77's. 78's can be more challenging depending on mods. 2. I definitely needed to boost my crit multiplier when I last posted. I'm around 500 now on all 3 traps. Crit base is around 40-50 and with power charges it naturally escalates from that. You'll notice I'm rocking Doedre's Tenure newb gloves. It's the spell power. Just for shits'n'giggles I threw them on one day to see how it impacted my dps. It helped quite a bit, and few other items have the affix of spell power outside of weapons and uniques. I am capped on all my resists without the gloves so I'm fine there. 3. I'm at 4k life and 1.5k ES. Occasionally I get the surprise attack from multiple physical sources all at once but generally I can recover from a big hit or 2. Survivability isn't an issue anymore if I pay attention. 4. I dropped EE after DP's suggestion but I'm going to go back to it as it is a natural fit for my build. I vaporize maps with the EE affix. 5. Quality gems are making a huge impact. I know- DUH! Just saying I wasn't there yet when I last posted. Since I am crit based the q20 increased critical damage gems are playing a big role. In summary I think this type of crit trapper is still viable but it's been a little gear intensive to push further along. I find the lack of viable trap options a bit disappointing. When some skills are converted to traps it just doesn't synergize well...and let me tell you I've tried EVERYTHING. I tried practically every cold, fire and lightning skill in a trap and nothing seems to work as well as what I'm currently using. For single target dps -if you can invest a couple links in vaal storm call for bosses and have a way to immobilize the target (aka bear trap) I could see it as a nice luxury skill. I currently like having vaal lightning trap as a guaranteed shock for big packs and bosses...and you can save up to 3 of them. Thank-you again for all the suggestions! I played around with bear trap some and it still hits like a ton of bricks- nice for single target dps. |

This looks very solid, and clearing 76-77 maps with a trapper is always incredible.
Skill tree looks promising and with decent life/ES (considering the 50% less from Acro). What do you think about running the Deerskin boots (it's a 5L) for Shock Nova, move your fire trap setup to the helmet, and add Hypothermia to the main Cold Snap setup? It's not that Inc Critical Strikes is not good, but I just find (especially for AoE skills) that Inc.Area of Effect might prove better for clearing speed? Of course you're the one playing/feeling the difference, if you think the AoE is enough on Snap and Nova then it's enough, I'm just "thinking out loud :P" Other than that, your gear is good, the tree is good, and to be honest, I'm gonna be using your tree as a template for any future trapper builds I go for :D Good Luck out there! Hey, also tried my first tri-elemtal trapper.
I reached know level 50 and maybe you can help me with my passiv skill tree. I think about a new char, because this tree seem be better. I dont know what is better crit or just normal elemantal damage. At the moment i cant realy kill mobs with traps, so its a little bit dissapointing to play with incinerate. " Sorry for the delayed response. This was my first trapper so the other guys may offer better feedback. At first glance I'd say I need more information. What kind of traps are you using? You mentioned incinerate I think? As far as crit vs pure ele damage I'd say again it depends on your trap choices and what gear you have currently. Typically a crit build relies less on spell damage and more on crit multiplier, but you still need enough base spell damage to raise the floor of your dps range. Pure ele damage is great for burn builds and will deliver more consistent damage but minus the huge satisfying screen clearing crits. |

In the end i created a new char, because scion is not the best starting char for a trapper. This is my new planed skill tree With this new tree my damage is for coldsnap 2,4k and fire 800. I am now level 50 and can clear maps and bosses. So it worked quite better then the last one. For my traps i use coldsnap, firetrap and shocknova.
