[1.3.0] Jaws of Agony Crit Trapper - Edited build for next HC League

At lvl 73 with this build and thought I'd share my gear since I'm going dps over defense (softcore):

My Gear

Cloak is mandatory. This build just doesn't have the defenses to pull off anything else. It's also REALLY slow (even more so for me since I use Rainbowstride) unless you like to travel everywhere with Lightning Warp. You could use Haste, but it's not enough of a boost to make it worthwhile. Discipline or Purity of Elements are other aura options on top of Clarity and HoT (not technically an aura), so I went with Purity in order to use more dps gear. My +1 trap belt is cool, but that particular mod is fairly useless here.

I really like the Cold Snap trap, but honestly you could leave that out of the build completely and just use Lightning/Bear Trap (both linked to Multiple Traps) to generate power charges. I might eventually drop Cold Snap for a CwDT setup.

I'm at something like 6.3k tooltip dps before power charges and still have many damage nodes to take on the tree:


Anyway, this build is cool and different. Unfortunately movement speed is low, defenses are just ok (no life leech), it's easy to get stunned (at least when your Lightning Warp setup is at a lower level), it takes a long time before things get exciting (can't equip Jaws of Agony until lvl 70), and clear speed is comparatively unexceptional except perhaps at really high levels when you can get all your power charges and a lot of crit nodes on the tree.

I really want to like trap builds but they always seem to pale in comparison to other ranged options.

Instead of going all the way over to the Templar side to get a little bit of ele damage and pen, wouldn't it be strictly better to get elemental equilibrium...
If you stay closer to the shadow/ witch tree, its also really easy to grab leadership and charisma giving us more flexibility and possibility the mana to run discipline

No, this is rly not a good idea.

We rly dont care about Leadership and Charisma is too far. Then you have sovereignty templar side.

A bit of dmg templar side ? Celestial Punishment ?

Trapper are basically not affected by reflect so what you want is an huge amount of dmg.

You moving most of the time and when/if its dangerous you can freeze everything so you dont need to be tanky as much.

Im actually lvl 91 in bloodline playing this build.
My fire trap does 14k+ dps with power charges.
This is fun but something is missing, like every trap build.
almost of the time i feel frustrated cause i cant spam my fire trap.
compared to other build witch can spam an attack that hit 10000 time/sec with 50%+ crit chance, you have 3 traps with insane cooldown refresh...
Its the boring side. If you dont crit there is no prolif so no dmg.

I dont play anymore with Jaws of Agony cause i lose like 2-3k dmg. I use a rare spirit shield with spell dmg / crit spell. Most of time i play with Carcass Jack instead of Cloak.

Since i OS every pack if i crit, assassins mark is enough to generate power charges.

The problem is when i play in full party group.
Dmg are rly less efficient and since im not one shoting anymore its hard to sustain 7 power charges.
Instead of ColdSnap/Prolif/Trap/Multitrap i use a link ColdSnap/Prolif/PowerChargOnCrit with 20%Q Pcoc. It help a bit without Jaws of Agony.

Im trying solutions to make more dmg but it take time and its not easy.
Im actually double curse with Windsceam AssMark/EleWeak.
A triple curse with flammability and Elemental equilibrium could be rly better but it need like 9 skill points. Will not be without concessions and lightning trap aoe is not perfect to apply EE.

Nevertheless you cant use 5L to apply triple curses and herald of thunder is not rly effecient to apply curses too... It look so broken.

I've been using this build and I still am not high level enough for Jaws of Agony (only 3 levels left !) but here is what I learned:

-This build needs a lot of dex and strength and will not get the strength until late that it's not getting through passives, leveling with an Atziri's foible is great, you can also get 2X +30 nodes early.

-I don't know why Saboteur was not taken but I got it because it's 26% trap damage for 2 points.
-Get clever construction or bosses and whirlwinder enemies will just destroy your traps before you do any damage.

-I leveled without using crit or power charge nodes and getting all the burning nodes in the Witch area (which is what I recommend until you can equip Jaws of Agony)

-Getting Blood Syphon and Soul Siphon in the shadow starting area is really nice for leveling.

-It requires some tricky itemization because your resists will be low but I used Sunblast belt and Deerstalker boots. The reason why is because you can put cold snap, lightning trap, ele prolif and multiple trap in deerstalker and save a lot of slots for other gems. This allowed me to put clarity on reduced mana and add another 60% aura (I added Discipline and gained a much bigger mana pool and regen but you could add purity of elements since the boots prevent you from getting resists in that slot) Deerstalker will also add a lot of mobility while leveling.

-Durability is so-so but Artic Armor helps a lot. Don't forget you're using trap and should bottleneck ennemies so you should never be in the fray. I used a cast on damage taken level 2 with frost wall and blind attached to it since cwdt enduring cry is going away in the next patch. It proved extremely good by interupting ennemies, blinding them and forcing ennemies to move around the wall and step in traps. It also protects me from charging ennemies like Rhoas and Blackguards.

Proliferating the crit burn from fire trap with increased area of effect and a high level prolif gem is insane and will one-shot bosses, their friends, neighbors, relatives and leave you with a fresh minthy breath.

There's just nothing like it.
