The Mathil Tornado/Puncture Spec - Cheap Uber Atziri Viable
I don't use herald of ice with this spec because it adds virtually nothing. I go from 23k tornado to 23.5k or something measly like that. It's not worth the reservation of extra mana which I need to spam on mana intense things like atziri adds, 50% regen maps, double vaals, etc.

Mathil, do you stream? Your voice and demeanor are very soothing.

Hey there,
I just returned to the game after having not played in over a year, and decided to give ranger a try with this spec. So far, it's great! I've been doing maps for a day or two and am level 69. I'd love to get some insight from more experienced players as to what gear I should be focused on upgrading next, and specifically what I should be looking for. I know the general rules of trying to get life, resistances, crit chance and modifier, but any advice would be extremely welcome. Here's my current setup:

I don't have a herald of ash gem yet sadly, but I'll get one soon. Same goes for the cast-when-hit gem for enduring cry etc. Thanks for the guide! |

I'm pretty broke and mostly play self found, but I just got a drillneck drop. Is it worth it for this build? Or keep using those spike point quivers that seem to give a lot of crit chance? Doesn't appear like drillneck would be useful for this build since it adds no crit percentage.

" Hah, thanks for that. I think it's my general coasting through life attitude. No, I don't/can't stream right now. Internet simply isn't good enough. I'm looking into moving house to a region that has internet capable of streaming because it is something I'd like to do. " Herald of ash in your setup, definitely. I'm really not sure if Lioneye's is any decent but I highly recommend moving on to a decimation/harbinger bow with crit. Your big hits will be far more reliable that way. Try to get a quiver that has base crit and crit/crit multi/life/wed/phys/leech. All that good stuff. Save resists for other slots where you can't get such nice dps stats. Your belt is fine and your boots could use some life from a master craft. Try to get some diamond rings with accuracy/life and use the glove slot to help fill out resists/life. " I've never had one so I haven't tried it out myself. I think it can potentially be worth it though, yes. You'll have to pick up the pierce nodes on the passive tree to make it worth while and get your mana leech elsewhere but overall it's probably going to be a dps increase. Really enjoy your videos - I saw your skill breakdown one and it's driven me to ice shot. I've got my char to 80 and it's been 3 days, I'm having a blast as you can probably tell.
I've found one thing to be extremely useful and potent. It's not, strictly speaking, applicable to the build in this thread, but since watching your videos and seeing you trying out different skill gems, it's something I'd be really keen to hear your opinion on. I've ditched rare boots for windscreams. I've linked rain of arrows - curse on hit - projectile weakness - ass mark. It's become second nature to pop one before I let loose with LMP ice shot. On top of the damage boost and knockback comes something I consider pretty important as I don't have a drillneck. Projectile weakness at 20/20 gives 74% chance to pierce. When linked to curse on hit 20/20, the increased curse effect means you have a roughly 90% chance to pierce. I don't know how useful this is for nado shot, but for ice shot it's pretty phenomenal. Of course, this pierce doesn't count towards drillneck's damage, but on the other hand, it not only saves you the trouble of having to buy one, but also the passive point investment required for pierce. Perhaps even more significant is that it allows you to drop the pierce gem. It furthermore allows you to pick and choose the stats on your quiver to fill holes in your setup. It's also pretty damn fun, since just as the arrows land from rain, your first shot is about to hit the enemy. It feels very clean, especially with ice shot, a clean skill in itself. On the other hand, you do have to give up 3 of your other gems (since you use ass mark already). It also, as I've said, doesn't count towards drillneck's damage if you have one of them. It also makes you more reliant on curses for your damage output. Finally, you need to make up for the lack of a sizeable resist piece, as it's only (max) 15% allres. As an aside, shadows and dust are really nice gloves if you can spare the resist - crit+multi+manaleech+blind/30%addedphysaschaosonrampage is pretty good for only a few chaos. But yeah, would be sweet to hear some of your thoughts on this. Last edited by MIJOTHY on Sep 17, 2014, 12:31:01 AM

Is it worth running Herald of Ice ? I have 130 mana left after it. I took off points from ( 2x 20% crit node ) & ( 3x accuracy node ) for extra %%% mana & Primal spirit.
Another Question, Would "Accuracy" increase your chance to hit yourself when attacking reflect mobs ? My current gear not so good but Capable to clear all map up to lvl 78.

Love this build ! | |
" Always nice to know people enjoy my builds. Just so you know though, for every successful build of mine you see, there's 10 that have failed. I more or less throw shit at the wall and see what sticks. " I quite often swap my tornado for ice shot for a few maps and have some fun too. Clear speed is really quite similar if only a bit worse but it's nice for a change of pace and seeing a different skill. Your boot idea is quite interesting. If it's working for you then by all means keep going. I'd hesitate personally because a) lose 20% move speed, res, life and b) my playstyle with this character right now is just blaze through everything by shooting once/twice and moving to the next pack. Having to shoot an extra skill to precurse would feel pretty bad for me but I can see it being practical at lower dps levels or higher monster hps (uber trash for example or multi player parties). For ice shot specifically... yea I guess that would be quite nice. Careful not to rail yourself to reflect. One of the perks of ice shot as a quick replacement for tornado shot is dealing with phys reflect better because you're only dealing phys to the front line of mobs, and a reduced amount at that. When you pierce everything instead though you'll be shooting phys at all of them, and I imagine exploding the cones of ele damage as per the skill at every wave of the pack too. Sounds quite dangerous for both types of reflect at that point. It's not something I've tested but that would be my concern when thinking about that type of setup. " " Accuracy does increase your chance to hit yourself through reflect. There's a conversion for chance to dodge reflect with Ondars and stuff up somewhere on the forums that you can find by doing a bit of searching or googling it. " Thanks for the quick response and feedback. Thus far I've only really screwed myself over to reflect when I one shotted myself thanks to offscreening something with undercapped cold res and 2.5k hp. Now I'm sitting between 3-3.5k and running purity of ice (I don't have prolif linked to ash, and my ice shot is pretty cheap with 3 pieces of elreon jewellry) and with a sapphire+jade flask pretty much always up for rares, reflect hasn't been an issue. Whether this is just luck or whether it is in fact a sturdy defence mechanism remains to be seen. My gems aren't max level nor quality yet so it's possibly a fragile one. For ele reflect maps, I'll generally just swap to split or nado. The single target is abominable though. Thankfully there's puncture. Last edited by MIJOTHY on Sep 17, 2014, 3:13:34 AM
