R9 series GPU - severe FPS drops
Hi all!
So I've recently updated my GPU from a geforce 465 GTX to an R9 270x. I used to play Path of Exile just fine, with all settings maxed out, and now, with what is theoretically a superior card, I get insane fps drops whenever there is a little bit of action on my screen. If I'm standing still on a given zone I can get up to 110 fps, but as soon as I move and a pack of monsters appears (or anything else for that matter - even static meshes will do the trick) the game drops to about 10 to 5 fps. This makes me really sad because with an fps drop that big the game is virtually unplayable. It gets a little bit better if I play at minimum settings but not much (around 20 fps). Is there any known issue with r9 series graphics cards or AMD in general? Is anyone else having a similar problem? Anyway I can fix this? Thanks a lot in advance. Bumping. Has anyone else reported this problem?

After many hours of googling I found out that this issue is related to the processing of network packets.
The network performance of your computer seems to be throttled to 10 packets per millisecond which causes stuttering and therefore has to be raised. BEFORE YOU DO THIS PLEASE MAKE A RESTORE POINT, SO IF ANYTHING BAD HAPPENS YOU WON'T HAVE TO BLAME ME :) What you have to do is: 1. Open the Registry Editor. (Start>Run>regedit) 2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Multimedia\SystemProfile\ 3. Set the "NetworkThrottlingIndex" value to FFFFFFFF hexadecimal. (Default value is 10). Screenshot 4. Restart your computer. If it works let me know. Last edited by silentkarl#7721 on Jul 31, 2014, 4:36:38 AM

Hi there!
Thanks a lot for the reply. I did as you instructed and unfortunately I still get the same frustrating spikes. Pic related. http://imgur.com/do0nZwG

Do you play other games? Does it happen on them?
Let's start with the beginning. Are your graphic card drivers on the latest version ? Can you refresh your Windows Experience Index ? Follow these instructions : Download MiniToolBox; Execute it; Check the "List Installed Programs" checkbox; Click on "Go"; Copy/paste the content of the output log on PasteBin and post the link in this thread; |

That GPU should run the game with 2 fingers in the nose :D
I think you should start with your in game video settings and your GPU driver settings. Have you made sure you've installed the latest driver and checked the settings that are available? There are many options you can test with, my driver (r290x) has options to optimize applications or to overrule them completely amongst many other options... And to answer your question: GGG has not exactly been able to reproduce FPS drops with AMD cards but it seems mostly related to the old HD series (I also experienced it and it was the last drop for me to buy a new computer), not the more recent R2 series. AMD cards in general have had a lot of known issues, but a lot of those are VERY machine/configuration specific and there just hasn't been a lot of information on what are the exact right settings you should have.
One suggestion is ... since you upgraded your card from an nvidia to an amd card, you likely have nvidia drivers still hanging around. You should probably boot into safe mode of windows and run a driver sweeper to completely remove all the old nvidia stuff, and likely the amd catalyst stuff as well. Just start over completely fresh. Once you are fresh, install the latest AMD drivers for your card directly from the AMD site. Give that a shot. If you still have issues, you will likely need to tweak some settings to get more stable FPS. I know a lot of people have good results by doing two things: 1) Set a frame limit on the max FPS to be equal to your monitor's refresh rate. If you are running at 60hz refresh, you should set the max frame limit to 60FPS. 2) Enable vsync inside the game only. Disable vsync in the other settings (sometimes it is set to vsync in the control center, or is set to adaptive vsync). Those things can sometimes have a good effect on frame stability in many configurations. Good luck. |

" This is not true, it's the HD series that causes FPS issues and definitely not more recent ATI cards. And also it's not the AMD card that has issues but the game that has optimization issues. Last edited by Startkabels#3733 on Aug 2, 2014, 12:44:46 PM
