Strongboxes are broken.

Only times I ever died from boxes in ambush were all my fault. Not having a thawing potion (freeze), getting hit by ice nova with sub-par cold res, opening a detonate dead box with tons of corpses around etc.
I guess this is all standard players experiencing them for the first time who were under the assumption that they are just free loot showers. |

" My guess is that you don't read threads and just answer the obvious troll response. Fun fact: Right as I started watching some streams, first thing I hear is how dangerous and many people RIPed from them. And they were skipping them, save for cart boxes. Ain't that so much fun? |

" I can sympathize with your frustration, but I don't think the strongboxes are broken at all. The strongboxes are designed to kill characters by ambushing them with sudden deadly attacks. It is very easy to die from opening a strongbox if you are not 100% prepared. I think, that's why GGG didn't make Ambush the HC league last season. The lag caused by the load time simulates a simultaneous rush on your character. Some of the strongbox mods can be very dangerous. Detonating Dead, Revive dead monsters with Onslaught, Rogue Exile, Curse and Freeze. Freeze can be the most deadly if you don't have an "of heat" flask or sufficient life/ES to withstand the initial flurry of attacks. Curses can be bad as well, especially for spell casters when "Silence" is evoked, which it frequentoy is. There are a couple of survival techniques for people facing Strongboxes.... Any kind of diversion (totem, minion etc) that can soak up a portion of the initial assault will help. Smoke Mine is a a huge help, as many have noted. You can cast a nearby portal to escape through. For some characters, standing and fighting might be a better option that trying to run through them and rubber banding back due to desync. Strongboxes are deadly, as they should be. I really love strong boxes in terms of adding a controlled amount
of bonuses to the playerbase. there are some builds that can more easily deal withh them than others but in generally everyone can do a few things. read stats: it will freeze you, be ready to hammer your thaw flask. use your quicksilver before activating. be prepared to use an aoe stun or freeze skill, or a mobility/escape/increased defense skill that being said, there are a lot of unfair deaths. If ggg could prevent full surround but keep the danger of the pack that would be ideal. maybe spread the monster spawns sufficiently that if you react very fast, you will likely escape with only a few hits. as it is sometimes they flat out spawn surrounding you, without cyclone or whirling blades or whatever you are fucked. |

" Btw, i'm having 0.2-0.5 lag at most when opening stuff. https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/1552460 - my drop solution

" Can you please kindly quote a post in this thread where people complain about the combat difficulty of strongboxes? Or is it possible that this thread is about the performance issues related with the lag at the moment of opening the box?? Reading is overrated, it is so much more fun replying without reading!! |

" Strong boxes are a joke, they simply require you to be prepared for them. Invasion was a thousand times harder simply for the fact that most of the mobs that can kill you were long range and could kill you from the corner of your screen without you knowing that they were there. At least for boxes you can be prepared; anyone that is complaining about them is pretty dumb, they are pretty much free loot boxes outside of maps. |

I am a little bit frustrated with the strongboxes myself atm. Yesterday I ripped my one month guy with 5k life and 75% fire resistance at merci docks, when I opened a blue box. I clicked, screen froze for 2 seconds and when it resumed it turned out 20 fire dogs have spawned on top of me and started blasting. It was only a few weeks ago when someone posted a video where they opened a box and 20 devourers spawned, they even used warp and it just desynced them back to box to get oneshot. The main problem is you can open a 1000 boxes and be fine and when you least expect it something completely out of your control is going to happen.
I am concerned about these things getting added fulltime the core game in their current form because at some point I would consider just not opening them ever if there is a 0.1% chance that it will be an insta death, but then again GGG is balancing drop rates accounting for boxes, exiles, etc.. so it gets even more frustrating to think about it. I don't think the community should justify the obvious technical problems with stongboxes by saying there are ways around them. I am perfectly aware of timing warps, mines and other movement tricks to avoid death by stongbox. But the fact you have to resort to such things in the first place shows there is a problem. And more so these methods are not even 100% effective. I just hope the devs are sure what they are doing before integrating the boxes in the core game especially in the hardcore leagues. |

" Unless you are doing some maps with strong mods in it i find that hard to believe. I find the strongboxes alot of fun and much better when those random boss mods, i have yet to find a exile you just can't just face tank, the random bosses was like 10 timer stronger when the rogue exiles and they could even kill you if you did not watch out for them. outside of maps they are pretty much free loot boxes.
