Global POE is 1 server

Very few of us understand what we're talking about. I know enough to know the concept of a "server" isn't what most people think of when they say it.
You're all missing a very key point here.

This is Garena.

Anyway, the gateways are probably not true servers, but they do separate the continents path to the main server in NZ. If there's trouble in Texas, the US gateway into main server doesn't work, as it has in the past, and if something goes awry in the Netherlands, Europe gateway is down, but you can still connect with different ping to America or Australia. "Global POE" is one server that all the gateways connect to which is why you can party with people on the other side of the world.

I have no idea how much info the data centers at Texas/Netherlands/Singapore have. Perhaps there is enough to run a game there, so the 80 ping on your gateway no matter where you are and the terrible latency when parting across gateways.

I used to host an MMORPG server a few years ago.

General structure tends to be:

-Login server {does authentication, links to character server}, there can be multiple login servers.
- Character server {stores characters, your sick l00tz, stash all that crap. There can be multiple character servers.
- Game Server {map info, where your character is, interactions, all that crap. There is normally only one game server, although more modern games are bucking the trend.

All i'm thinking is, how big is the impact on desync if there really is only 1 server?
I am the light of the morning and the shadow on the wall, I am nothing and I am all.

Please share more. I am genuinely interested.

Let me make this simple.

When I enter town, my ping goes up. Why? Because the town instance is in another server other than the one (Europe) I am in.

When someone makes an instance, their instance uses the server that they have chosen as the gateway. When someone in US makes the instance, it will be an US instance. When an Europe player joins, that player switches their server from Europe to US, which means more lag for him. But hey, we can play together!

It might seem that we're in 1 big world, but it actually consists of several tiny worlds between different gateways that you can enter regardless of your location.

Pretty much the answer I was about to type up. The bit I've highlighted is what a lot of players don't get.

You've responded to the OP perfectly, since their main concern seemed to be how this structure affects party play. Well done.
And they said *I* was bad at PoE. At least I made it out of act 1 and know how to use the /dnd function. El oh fucking el.

I am Path of Exile's biggest whale. Period.
