Global POE is 1 server

Global POE is 1 server but it has gateway access for different regions. Originally it had America,Singapore,Europe and possible Oceana(these are gateways and people often confused them as servers) cannot remember. The server for all these locations is 1 server only.

Is this true?

And if it is true, then how do the gateway access affect party play?

Do players in party with different gateways really affect the performance of the game?

Yes. How do you think we can play with people from all over the world? In other games the company is so rich they have local servers instead of just gateways.
it's strange, I'm in Europe and I have 80 ping, so the server should be in Europe

^ that's what I was asking myself
Wait, what? There is not only one server, there's servers in the US (Texas), EU (Netherlands), Asia (Singapore) and Australia (Sydney?).
GGG banning all political discussion shortly after getting acquired by China is a weird coincidence.

But its 1 server because its 1 world.
Let me make this simple.

When I enter town, my ping goes up. Why? Because the town instance is in another server other than the one (Europe) I am in.

When someone makes an instance, their instance uses the server that they have chosen as the gateway. When someone in US makes the instance, it will be an US instance. When an Europe player joins, that player switches their server from Europe to US, which means more lag for him. But hey, we can play together!

It might seem that we're in 1 big world, but it actually consists of several tiny worlds between different gateways that you can enter regardless of your location.

When the whole PoE realm went down once ( 1 year ago If I remember correctly ) I read on a tweet that their game servers where in the USA. So there is only one region with game servers. There are gateways in 4 world zones as someone mentioned up there. My theory is that they are not yet using a cloud infrastucture because the traffic costs are still very high. Gateways might send the user through a point to point network provided by the USA game server provider to help reduce latency and that's all.

On a cloud infrastucture, you can replicate real time the game servers geographically :) So as an example, people connecting from China would go through Singa GW until it reaches the replicated game server on that zone. That server would then syncronize itself with the other game servers around the world and the user wouldn´t have to travel with his/her shitty connection both way to the USA and come back. That is WHY you lag so much when you play with someone from China. They have a very bloated and badly planned network, and it´s really difficult to play complex online games there. If you then add this other long distance problem, it´s even more fucked up.-
