A somewhat new player's review of Path of VexOhmIstDol
" No one is claiming that you can't beat the game self found, although to many people beating the game appears to be finishing act 3 merc, which is a pretty crappy definition of beating the game People are just saying that beating the game self found is a lot harder to do than if you trade Its like playing counter strike on a touchpad, yes you can still do it, but its just frustrating |

" Please take no offense ( though i know you will ), But clearly this game isnt designed for ppl like you. Lets recap My adventures in POE. I Brought the beta key and started playing. My characters got wiped TWICE. Thats fine, it was a LEARNING CURVE for me. Since then i have got a 74 mara, 50 ranger,75 witch and a 44 witch. I got that far from trial and error and to this day ive only traded maybe 5 times in total.. Now, all my new characters i create have uniques and great items ive FOUND along the way with the others. As it stands right now, ive put in maybe 1000 hours into poe and am comfortable with my currency and gear. So unless you have 1000 hours clocked up and STILL have no gear etc, then you really cant complain. These games are all about " put in the time - reap the rewards " ( well, most are , d3 just swipe your credit card and win ) You see, this is how old school games used to do it. The classic example of a new old school game, vanilla wow. A mount back then was alot of money. I remember seeing guys with them and going wow, i want one. You had to actually play the game for a long amount of time and save for that mount. Fast forward to todays generation wow. Level to 80 or w/e the cap is ( wow died in wrath ) and a 3 week noob can afford 3 mounts etc, handed to them, thanks for coming... P.s ... Everyone crying about the difficulty etc in this thread doesnt deserve to play this game, simple as that... The D3 casual, generic and boring faceroll is ------------> TL;DR..I am so glad GGG crafted a game for old school gamers. I am so sick of this mainstream generic rubbish ( D3 ) being forced onto our HDD these days. |

After reading the opening post i'm under the impression that 80-90% of what the OP is critizing the game for is caused by a HUGE lack of knowledge and/or comparing PoE to other games of the genre that are similiar but simply not the same.
Micro/Macro: design decision, like it or not. I like it for instance. Loot: loot is fine if you know what you have to look out for. Yes, i'm serious. If you know the game, there's alot of good stuff you can find. Blue items offer great bonuses and are easy to craft, and what you lack in some parts you can make up by chosing the right flasks or skills. 1) Yep, i miss sets aswell, but the game's still under developement. Not to mention it's working just fine without sets. 2) There are those items - PoE throws them at you non stop, you just gotta know what to look out for. 3) Wait what, are you serious? Coast, Muds, Ledge, Prison, Forest, Crossroads, City of Sarn, Docks, Solaris, Lunaris, Catacombs, Library ... not to mention easy beginner maps like Tropical Island. 4) Just like 2), you gotta look out for it and have to know what to look out for. Personally, i felt that way you feel about PoE aswell about Diablo2 back in the days. I was young and had little to no clue about the game. If i had known the game and what to look out for, i would've been fine. Same here with PoE. 5) That's a design decision. From all the ARPGs i've played PoE has still the best crafting system (TL, TL2, Diablo, Diablo2, Diablo3, Sacred, Sacred 2, Titan Quest). Seems you're lacking knowledge here once again btw: http://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/Vendor_recipes Trading: And you think if it would've been possible back in the days, that there wouldn't have been something like poe.xyz for Diablo2? Gimme a break. People are peole, don't blame it on the game. And beside that, GGG's working on it. Math: don't get that point tbh Desync: Wholeheartly agreed, desync is by far the biggest drawback of the game. Plot: I like it, still i kinda have to agree here. Could be better. But then again, i don't care too much for that anyway. Other games have a cool story and zero replay value. I rather have it the other way round. Music: Yep, nothing to add. Community: you blame a game for the community? That makes no sense. I've met tons of great people and alot of not-so-nice people, just like in every other game and just like in real life. Conclusion: you don't know much about the game and critize mostly the points that you know the least of. I kinda get it - people are spoiled nowadays, when they fail it's the game and not them. And don't get me wrong, i also strongly believe that PoE could do alot better if it was more accessible to new players, but if you invest into the game you'll get rewarded. That's what i like about the game the most. Finally a list of things PoE should have because it's 2013 and not the year 1999 anymore: Comfort functions like a button for auto sort inventory + stash, being able to drop items out the inventoy while holding down CTRL (just like when using the vendor), some _VERY BASIC_ options for the look of your character (body + face), customizable HUD + chat or even the ability to mod those, alot more chat shortcuts, search function in the stash... so many things. |

" Once again, what everyone misses when I say "no easy farming zones" isn't just that "oh hey I can mow down monsters with ease here", but also that I can find the highest level items in those same places. Everyone gets hung up on the "oh hey there are places where you can safely mow down endless slow skeletons and zombies". I'm saying "where's the place that I can safely mow down endless skeletons and zombies and find Voltaxic Rift, Soul Taker, Auxium, Tyrannical mod rares, etc..."? In D2, the Ancient Tunnels, the Pit, Mausoleum, and Crypt dropped the highest treasure classes in the game. You wanted Windforce? It could drop off of a freaking skeleton in an act 1 side area. Tyrael''s Might? Yep. Death's Fathom? Nightwing's Veil? Escutha's Temper? Griswold's Set? M'Avina's set? Gryphon's Eye? Anything in the game except annihilus and hellfire torch? Yep. Kill skeletons in those blood raven side houses. If docks dropped Voltaxic, Lioneye's (remorse or glare), Auxium, Andvarus, etc. etc., then I wouldn't have a problem. I'd just run docks all day, get a whole bunch of uber gear, and be happy. As for "I don't know what to look for" argument goes... I do know what to look for. +Life, +2-3 resists on armor, helmet, belt, boots, gloves. Generally want beyond 1200 EV or DF, not sure about ES. Rings and amulets are basically a toss up of "+life" and a bunch of other highly beneficial stats (resists, crits, IIR, etc...). Links: 5L-6L. Weapons: 250 DPS on a bow or single-handed weapon or go home. Probably something like 450+ on a 2H to make it worth anything. Generally, unless you're getting something that's eye-popping in at least one regard, it's vendor trash or worth a few chaos IF you can find a buyer for it. Until then, it's just taking up space in the stash. And yes, I *do* know about the chaos vendor recipe, but that gets stopped completely cold by the jewelry requirements. Basically, you find two rings and an amulet above level 60, congratulations, you have 2 chaos. So please, let's stop the assumptions. I've done my reading. Also, here's the reason that D2's crafting system was good: The ingredients were trash. Every last one of them. Basically unless a jewel in D2 was 35-40% enhanced damage with 15% IAS, it was considered junk. But hey, why waste the whole point of their existence? Now, they're crafting materials for blood gloves, caster amulets, and so forth. That system offered at least some RNG control. Also, the whole "hey, PoE is still in development", well... No, it isn't. Or, that can always be used as an excuse. Because it had its "official" release. So, while it's in Beta, you can have the excuse "the game's still in beta", but once it goes "live", no, it's no longer in beta, so it's fair game to fire away at it. |

" Why is it a con that you can't get the best items from the game doing mindless easy content? How many high level map only items are there in path of exile 5-6? While D2 was limited to 2-3? Please don't take a very small number of items and use it as a big con of the game. This is just being excessively whiny that you cannot literally find the top tier literally best 0.01% items in the game doing easy content. Crafting system in D2 was good because there is one, PoE is just starting to add in vendor/crafting recipes. What the D2 crafting system doesn't do is allow you to use standardize drops and have the chance to make godly stuff with orbs. Orb isn't bad, it just encourages only for you to use it for the best of the best things due to PoE having an ilvl system in which D2 doesn't. The only thing your argument boils down two which is both true is that D2 has much more content in finding items, using them and many different type of items and it was easier to play for the casual player. Even then almost every single item will drop in the game but half a dozen or less outside of maps. Last edited by RagnarokChu#4426 on Dec 27, 2013, 3:13:23 AM

" I've gotten quite a few nice crap unis on norm on new characters. goldrim, facebreakers, doedre's ring, ungil's gauche, even a reaper's pursuit actually. just a matter of luck, or leveling with mf early...which apparently no one but me does. you just get them more on merciless cuz you're probably farming luna 3 and maps by then. no one farms norm... it's been a while, but I'm pretty sure the places you named didn't drop the absolute highest items, and I'm not even talking about uber trist drops yet. zod rune, griff, the crappy IK set chest, and probably some other things (possibly windforce) only drop from pindle, diablo, and baal, who are the only 3 mobs in the highest treasure class. most of the other farming areas only dropped 2nd highest. some like countess dropped from a crap treasure class only, but with a high rate for runes. just no one really cared cuz zod and IK chest sucked ass anyways, so only lit sorcs got shafted by it. likewise, a lot of builds don't care about any of the map only drops...it just happens to be LA builds' turn to get shafted plus, not like you could uber trist items outside of uber trist anyways. your point is still invalid |

Nope, wrong... see this:
http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showthread.php?126824-MF-Area-Levellist-85-84-83-82 In other words, there were plenty of places in D2 that you could get the absolute best gear in the game without risking life and limb against monsters with obnoxiously massive damage (gloams, succubi, perhaps a few more). Places like The Pit, The Ancient Tunnels, and especially The Mausoleum were extremely easy for the rewards they offered. The only thing you ever had to fear from the Pit was a pack of archers with some obscene combination of mods (think amplify damage + might or fanatacism aura + cold enchant = unhappy sorcies). Beyond that, it was a bunch of fallen and melee rogues--aka the very first monsters from act 1, in massive clumps, for a sorceress (or zon, or paladin, or whoever) to just spam AoE on and flatten. That provided enjoyment, and last I heard, ubers didn't drop anything special besides hellfire torch, and even the ubers themselves weren't so much *hard* as specialized--i.e. a smiter paladin could solo that entire instance with rather mediocre gear so long as he didn't approach it in an absolutely stupid manner (i.e. somehow get all three bosses together). |

This boils down to "do i like the design decision or not?" - you obviously do not like it that some items can not drop outside certain maps, others (like me) do like that fact. Oh btw, ever heard of Orb of Chance?
" Well, in this case (and still - i doubt it because you make false statements like the "cannot get certain stats from recipes", which is plain wrong) it again boils down to "do i like the design decision or do i not?". Me and others are pointing you towards why those things you critizise are design decisions and not bad design like you want to make us believe. I do like the fact that PoE is a lot about "overcoming the odds", "play concentrated and dedicated and you get rewarded more than a brainless low-level-content-grinder" and the fact that there are millions of things you can learn about the game before you can begin to min/max certain aspects, you obviously think that this is bad game design. Well, i disagree. " Not as an excuse, just to remind you that they might adress things you're missing right now. See, other people do not miss certain things that you're missing, for them (like me) it's a complete game and the true D2 successor. For others, like you, it's not quite done yet obviously, and to those i say: it's still being worked on! Come back in a few months. Alot of your arguments could've been done when you take like... i don't know, Half-Life 2 and write about why it's not as great as Diablo 2. What i want to say: there are design decisions being made that you can like or dislike. That's why you're free to play the game or not play it at all. I just find it weird that you talk down a game just because the game designer's have a different vision of their game than you do. Don't get me wrong, you have some solid points and there are others things you could critize about PoE for sure, but your points just boil down to "like it or not", not to "is it good or bad". |

hl2 wasnt trying to be anything other than hl2
poe is most certainly trying to be diablo and poe right now isnt about overcoming the odds, that implies a measure of skill is required. what it takes to do well in path of exile is luck and the patience to capitalize on the ignorance of others for profit. the majority of it is gambling , nothing more , nothing less and anyone can throw coins in a slot machine and watch it take all their money. " 85 means highest ilvl that can drop is 87 from a rare. IK chest's base item is 88, so...only pindle, diablo, baal, and nihilak apparently seems windforce and griff are both 85 though, which is weird, considering how impossible it is to actually get them. but the point still stands. there are items exclusive to some of the most dangerous areas in the game...whether they're actually useful at all or not smiter is about the only build that can trivialize uber trist and event diablo. dunno why you felt that's relevant. all a hammerdin needs is enigma and hoz to trivialize the entire rest of the game you know, like how shield, blender, and summoner builds can do in poe. so technically, by your logic, maps aren't actually hard. just specialized hell, try chaos sanc with something like a duo element sorc, or melee druid, let alone uber trist. again...not every build is hammerdin, not in d2, and not in poe |
