But first and foremost would be skin transfers. They allow you to take the physical appearance of one item and apply it to the one you're wearing. But they're one time use only, so only use them when you've finally found your perfect (or close enough) gear. Beyond that, I can only give you a few general tips.. I do recommend you go with the $20 pack (free to play game; $20 to spruce up one of your characters is still 1/3 the price of a new release). It opens up quite a few more options. Take a look through the cosmetics and pick out a set that you think look good and complement your character, and wait for them to go on sale.
