Is shield block considered stun? (mechanically)
I know they are similar but I want to make sure if the engine treats them the same.
This is obviously because of the new support gem "cast when stunned". Will it trigger on a block that displays stun animation? Thanks! |

Come on GGG, I need this answered to get my new build rolling :P

I believe so, because if you get stun immunity, you no longer get the block animation. The block animation happens when you block a blow that would have stunned you if you had not blocked it.
hope that answers your question. |

Hard to say. The mechanics for the block animation work the same as it does for stun. If you block a hit that does enough damage that it would have stunned you had you not blocked it, then the block animation will play. Otherwise no block animation is played.
That being said, it might not actually be considered a stun because it operates off of block recovery and not stun recovery. IGN: Iolar

From the wiki:
Spoiler
When an attack is blocked, the game also calculates if the attack would have caused a stun were it not blocked. If it would have caused a stun, the blocking animation is played, stunning you briefly. If it would not have caused a stun, then you get a "free" block with no animation. Faster Block and Stun Recovery and Increased Block Recovery modifiers reduce the length of the blocking animation.

So we turned Gorge into a red map" |

Thanks for the help people! I'd still like an official response (or a test) because I'm following a similar logic to BRavich.

I've been wondering the same thing. The way I interpret it is blocks that play the animation have done so because the game registered the damage as being "stun" worthy. If the game has already registered it as stun, then it would proc "cast when stunned." However, blocking non-stun damage gives a free block and no stun occurred.
Short answer: Stun w/o a block --> cast Block animation plays --> cast That's how I inferred it at least. Could be wrong. GGG has the best answer. |

The Cast on Stunned Gem WILL proc when you visually block attacks. I can confirm this as I have seen it on my character.

I can aswell tell you that when you block and the animation is played you are stuned. If you try to do any actions during that animation you won't be able to, so to reduce the animation time you invest in block and stun recovery or take Nnwavering Stance (you can't use Cast on Stun support gem then)

my experience with block and evasion is that my cast on stun gem 55% means that i can clear entire map and trigfer it once.
in my experience block does not trigger cast on stun evasion builds are not that great for trigger gems. btw these show clearly how effective evasion and block are when above 55-60% |
