About the media release:
writing "USD$1.2m" is "wrong" imo, get rid of that $ sign (you know, Dollar is already in USD).

The US isn't the only country that calls their currency the dollar. New Zealand, where GGG is based, also uses the dollar.
If they didn't specify USD$1.2m in the press release, we wouldn't know if they meant New Zealand Dollar or US Dollar or Australian Dollar or what!
I think he's referring to the redundancy of 'dollar' in there - USD$ says United States Dollar Dollar, because both the D and the $ mean "dollar".

I don't actually know what's considered technically correct in such situations, but personally I've seen both USD$ and just US$ before.

The answer is probably both and neither all at the same time.

USD is the Iso standard; but unless you're involved in the financial industry directly, work for MegaConglomoCorp, or the Government Iso standards are unlikely to be directly relevant to much that you do. :-/
Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, weighing all things in the balance of reason?
Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful?
Any chance of mirroring yesterday's article here, so I can read it without giving Kotaku a page view?
Lots of negative comments on the Kotaku website... hmmm
