The added fire damage gem takes from your overall physical damage(that is YOUR weapon) and adds it as fire damage to tha spell amirite ? It doesn't need physical damage from the spell...

guess your confused a bit. you get no phys. damg from ice spear nor do you get any bonus to it from your phys. damg from your weapon. therefor you will get no fire damg from the added fire damg gem. its just like the auras that give you damg for attacks, you get no extra damg to spells from damg to attack auras. thats why spell damg dps is not the best way to go and most ppl use crit. nodes to make spells do any great amount of damg.

You could, as long as the build is adjusted to the lastest skill tree, and you aren't using item that is clearly unobtainable.
