Evasion + Iron Reflexes vs. Armor

When should someone NOT take Iron Reflexes over pure armor gear or pure evasion gear?

Maybe it's just me, but something doesn't seem balanced here. I have a 56 Marauder built for tanking with a shield, yet his armor / damage reduction is quite a bit lower than my 48 Ranger with Iron Reflexes. Similar grade gear, no armor or evasion nodes for either character yet...why is this so unbalanced? Is it due to dexterity giving +evasion, while there's no equivalent for straight armor builds?

Evasion values seem to be much higher than armor values for similar grade gear. Do you think reducing the evasion values, but increasing evasion effectiveness would fix this, or piss everyone off? Maybe I should just wear evasion gear and take Iron Reflexes on all my non-spell characters...lame.
I never get this line of thinking.

"Evasion with Iron Reflexes seems to be better, so I don't want to use pure armor. To fix this problem and make me comfortable using pure Armor, you should nerf Evasion + Iron Reflexes"

Just play what you want and don't worry about the few more points you're not getting by playing some other way? Or if you really care that much, just play the other way...

That being said, something DOES need to be done to make Evasion enticing all on its own without converting it to armor via Iron Reflexes, but I've heard that the devs are already working on this.

I think you need to re-read my post. I didn't say nerf anything. Thanks for the dev note!

There's something to be said for a '3/4 armour, 1/4 evasion' build, where you wear more or less pure Armour but also run Grace. Because of the diminishing returns on Evasion, even a small amount can get you to say 20% chance to evade, and it does add up in attritional fights (particularly when it comes to attacks that do elemental damage, as Charan said). If you're going to wear mostly Armour gear anyway, Iron Reflexes could well be a net loss.

OP: your Ranger has more Armour because of the Dex bonus to Evasion and because her base Evasion has been turned into Armour. On the other hand your Marauder's strength is giving him life, so he's more tanky in that respect. Also, chances are he has at least *some* Evasion left, which as I said is not really worth turning into armour (unless you have a build that is really designed to get hit, such as Tempest Shield + Molten Shell).

Oh lord.

My take on the matter, with better repsonses by smarter people.

Simplest thing I can say is when I went from evasion to IR (very briefly, I still need to wash my hands in shame anytime I think about it), the worst change was that every hit with elemental properties (and many have such) was smacking me with status effects.

This is because evasion obviously helps prevent hits from getting through *and* it reduces critical hits via the critical hit re-roll, thus mitigating status effects resulting from said crits.

Talk about dusting off an old post.

Yeah, I'm using Tempest Shield + Molten Shell on the Marauder. You do have a good point about the HP and 1/4 evasion.
I should go on record as saying I hate Iron Reflexes the way it is currently implemented. I'd rather it was gone or was just about anything else.

i use IR on my Blocking Fister and considering the amount of tankability i have i dont care getting Elemental status effect. but still its a good point Charan brings
but with 75block 75 all resist 13k armour, i dont care much even with only 3k life
with endu charges on i get 90% dmg reduce... my biggest threat is myself with my 300life cost cyclone lol
