Bots and Botting
" Sigh...Logging in multiple accounts to a boss fight to get better drops is not botting. Have to be pretty dense to not see the difference between a bot (auto play) and a passive guy just standing there in order to raise the drop chances.... Then of course there is Multi-Boxing. So Botting, Multi-Logging and Multi-Boxing are 3 different things but of course do have some commonalities. This issue has only been raised about a zillion times before... . |

I've done some code injection in my day, and I must say, preventing bots is a cat and mouse game. No matter your protection method, botters will reverse it and prevent the bot from getting detected.
You need to have some form of protection to keep botters somewhat at bay, but in the end, bots will work and protection won't. How Fusings Work: http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/38585/page/3#p1451934

" At about the stage the bots get to be installed as Rootkits, then they pretty much have won the war. Of course the degree of programming skill and effort that is involved with this means it is not likely to be happening in POE anytime soon as the reward for the developers of the bot does not justify the effort involved. Of course if POE gets as popular as the Diablo franchise then the bots will emerge. . |

" Multi-logging is multi-boxing, just to be clear. Same thing. Key repeating or automating your multi-boxes is where the line is crossed. No. Calm down. Learn to enjoy losing.

" errr...no they are not. Ask any multi-boxer player. Multi-logging: is logging on multiple accounts that just do nothing other than sit at boss fight or zone in order to increase the drop rate. They may run some auras etc but are otherwise completely passive while the main char does the work and kills the boss. Multi-boxing: all the characters are played actively and simultaneously. Botting: There is no active human involvement. Characters are active, but played without human input other than to start the bot off. . |

I too think that botting will never be totally gone from arpg's, but the currency system along with other things in PoE make it less effective and that way less atractive for the coders as the reward won't be as high.
I've always considered botting, multiboxing and buying stuff from chinese gold farmers as cheating. All of them are shortcuts to make you a better player, but the fact is you don't evolve as a player at all, only your pathetic e-peen does. Many of you don't agree with me and you are entitled to your opinion. But usually those who think that way are the ones that do it and their opinion is biased. These methods still ruin games. The newest and maybe the best example in the history of gaming is the aforementioned AuctionHouse 3. The currency system in that game is what it is and you can buy everything in it with enough currency. When enough people start using these shortcuts it practically forces more and more players to do so too if they wan't to be even somewhat competitive and recognised as a good player and not laughed at. It all comes down to the question "does money buy happiness?". For some people it seems so and I have no angry feelings towards them, only pity. It just seems silly to me if you think about the original motives to play computer games at all. At least when I think what those motives ar for me. Ppl have different motives I guess. |

TO STOP BOTTERS 100%: MAKE CAPTCHA TO LOOTING / FARMING. (it must be unreadable in bytes too) So simple (though it will be frustrating for players, but if you make it clear its there to stop botters, players will understand).

The Cutthroat league will be quite fun to find and gank the **** out of botters

" I just can't go without answering... Getting around a basic captcha that is not super intrusive to players will take maybe a week. Getting a fast temporary fix for that is as easy as 1,2,3. Captcha is probably the most intrusive and the least effective of ways to stop botters. In due time the botters will be the ones that suffer the least from the captcha ( they will complete it faster in average than the human player would ). |
