Spectre Vile Vulture unusable

Creating the spirit gem works fine. The vulture is labeled 120 spirit and I had 248 and zeroed all other spirit use. When hitting + to summon the vulture the icon for it being summoned shows in the upper left of my screen but it doesn't arrive any where on the screen until i remove the gem it flickers next to me for a second.
