XP loss on death kills my motivation.
As the title states, XP loss on death for some reason just kills my motivation to play. Enjoyed right up to the point where XP loss kicks in, and then every time I die I just lose enjoyment and go do something else.
I've read similar posts and the subsequent 'skill issue', 'get good', 'your wrong'. If thats your opinion then great, I'm happy with you having that opinion. However, I don't share it. It may be strange, but if I suffered 'X minutes of X% loss to XP gain' then I would probably not notice, not feel like I'd wasted a few hours, and just continue playing wthout noticing at the next level milestone that it took exactly the same amount of time to reach it had the XP just been lost. But instead seeing a chunk of XP disappear just feels bad to me. I'm assuming that if for instance I am level 80, but haven't gained any XP, then the XP will just drop to 0? It wouldn't matter if I died another 2 or 20 times. I'd still not lose any more XP. However, by having an x minutes of reduced XP gain or whatever, it would matter very much indeed. This seems like it would actually punish glass cannon builds more as well. And I wouldn't notice the XP bar going down. Actually, maybe I could just hide the XP bar and surprise myself every time I level lol. I keep reading people saying about making it a toggle. I get that this upsets people who want everyone to feel the same achievement (suffering?) that they get from slowly leveling their character. My opinion is it is a game, not a sport, I don't feel any sense of pride or real achievement in reaching level 100. I get my satisfaction from the release that killing the mobs and bosses give me. If XP loss on death is something GGG want in the game, great, do that, its your game after all. I'll enjoy it until it annoys me too much, and then leave with or without a sense of regret. I can guaruntee that if the above has triggered you in any way, then you have more significant emotional investment in the franchise than I do, and I am more than happy for XP loss to stay, I might not. But in the greater scheme of things I don't think that would make much difference. Last bumped on Feb 25, 2025, 6:12:46 PM

I realise it may help if I elaborated a little on why the deaths feel frustrating, and what I know is causing it:
1. Not enough health 2. Not enough elemental resists Just as soon as anything worth wearing with health, resists and armour drops, I'll be wearing it. I play as Warrior - Titan, heavily focused on melee, so: 3. Any rare with a slowing or mana loss aura messes up my day. I imagine if playing ranged means you are already 50% further out of danger than I am. I can't seem to escape once I realise I am in trouble. And spotting that trouble coming can be hard due to the mess (of fantastic graphics and effects I should add) on the screen. Skill? Might well be an issue here. both in playing, and the buildcrafting. |

There are many more factors that might lead to your deaths. Figuring those mistakes out and learning from them is a large part of the game.
I've explained this many times before - gaining levels past a certain threshold is not a requirement. You have a fully functional character at level 90, which is easily achievable with a sub-optimal build wearing random shit picked up off the ground. If you want to progress past that, you are expected to put in some effort. Dying should be a motivating factor for you, it's designed to force you to figure out what you're doing wrong. Without it, there are no right, or wrong answers and everything becomes a mindless grind. |

" Pretty much every game has death. Almost no game has xp penalties, and certainly not as harsh as POE2. I'm not sure why the White Knight / Trolls don't understand this. You can spend an entire day fighting Melania or Slave Knight Gale or Sister Friede or Isshin Sword Saint and not have to put up with the b.s. you get in PoE2. Because this is an actual game, not a loot pinata simulator.
Why don't you go and play those titles without the xp penalty then and take your ad hominem with you while you're at it. |

No, this game is Vampire Survivors with better graphics. The audacity of you to pretend you are playing a high-skill game where you get to tell others to "git gud" when you are just holding down 1 button and then hoovering up loot is quite the sight to behold.

A penalty is a tool to encourage learning from your mistake.
At level 95, your mistake is believing the idea of making another level was anything but a random chance for 99.9% of players. Because you sure as hell will not understand what just one-shot you across the screen and through a wall of zombies and 16.000 Energy Shield in Simulacrum. If your answer is then to tell me there is a service to whom I can send the recording of my PoE death for analysis and coaching, my answer would be that at such a point, the money would be better spent on an actual life coach, not a PoE coach. So you see, I did learn from my level 95 PoE mistakes. |
