Trial of Sekemas kills my buddy in the waiting room

So I'm trying to carry my buddy for 4th ascendancy, I go in, he waits at the book, I start fighting the boss, then mid fight he says game told him he failed.

What happens there?

I see people carrying for orbs non stop, is there a trick to it?
