Templar - How to make a viable build
Welcome! Thanks for joining me here today, I'll be your instructor, Rabbit. Please hold your questions until the end of the presentation, thank you.
Now, let's get started. Why are we here today? That's simple, we want to create a passive tree build with a Templar! First off, there are several things to keep in mind:
The current end-game of Path of Exile is hard. There are many monsters that will hit you at least once. Thus, it is your best interest to design a character that is capable of surviving one or more hits! Another thing to keep in mind is the method that the game calculates your damage. Without getting too much into the details, if an item, passive, or ability has the keyword "Increases" consider it adding to your damage multiplier. If the keyword is "More" consider it to multiply your existing damage. Everyone loves bullet points! DO:
DON'T:
Now, let's get into the specifics, shall we? The templar is an excellent starting point for players that want an elemental damage character. The largest elemental damage nodes are near the templar. The templar area also includes all of the staff nodes, making the staff a viable choice. Generally a templar would do best wearing intelligence/strength armour, and picking up passive skills that boost armour and energy shield. Another alternative is the staff weapon that has an innate ability to block attacks. Here are some example Templar builds: Elemental Damage (Archer) 71 point build This build is not perfect, but includes offense and defensive capabilities, and has a clear design goal. This would be an excellent start for a new user. I'll now open up the floor to questions... Yes, you, back there, go ahead.... TehHammer is not a crime!

Is the mic on? *tap tap tap* CHECK ONE TWO. *feedback* ow...
I don't quite understand why the skill tree builder thingy would have 111 points if it's impossible to get that many right now. Is there a reason for this gross misrepresentation? And can we expect to, maybe eventually, get enough content released to where this isn't an issue? Or at least reduce the amount of distributible points to the more realistic figure of ~70? Oh, and can you validate my parking? EDIT: Those are probably better off being aimed at devs, so here's one you can help me out on: Are the skeletons, zombies and specters perma-pets, or are they on a timer? And perhaps more importantly, are they a viable means of either damage or tanking to begin with? Last edited by AppleShrapnel#1363 on Jun 27, 2012, 7:49:38 PM

The reason the passive tree goes to 111 points is because that is the actual hard max in the game. You can't go above level 100, and you can't get more than 12 points from quests, for a total of 111 points.
Theoretically, you could actually make it to 111 points. Practically, you never will. That, combined with how often the skill tree changes while we're still in beta, is why it still shows 111 points available. For the second part, Zombies are permanent (until they re-die), skeletons are on a timer, and spectres are permanent (until they re-die also of course). They are viable in certain builds, but currently they're mostly a gimmick/exploit in end-game areas. Hopefully this will change when they get rebalanced in 0.9.12. TehHammer is not a crime!

" This positively the dumbest build ive ever seen. Tried it as a newbie until 39, when I realized you get ) drops as a templar required for this build. They should ban you from the forums (or you could do us all a favor and jump off a bridge). Thanks and FUCK you for wasting 20 hrs of my life. |

" While is true that a bow templar isn't really a first-time charachter(c'mon, the first toon is the one you alwais have difficulty with, and you show a bow templar??), tell him to fuck himself is seriously wrong; did he forced to use that build? No. Is this build sticked by the mods? No, so you could have read alot of builds(for example my lightng hammer build is so easy to use, provide high dps and strong defence with little effort and not so rare equipement..) So it is your fault if you decided to use this build and sucked, not his. Go QQ somewhere else. Last edited by kadrek91#0601 on Jul 8, 2012, 11:59:09 PM

Just hope no one else wastes their time with this crap build. He completely fails to take into account the fact that there are ZERO skills awarded for this build.
Also reveals a major flaw in the game; while its theoretically posssible to build these kind of nonesense builds, the devls didnt take it into account and dont give you the necessary skills to play it. If the Devs cant make the basic game playable, they fail, badly. In this respect, D3>POE by years. And D3 blew, lawl. |

" Actually that build works, is you that cannot make the build work. Actually even stranger builds works(physical witches, magic marauders etc.), it is you that cannot play this game, maybe because you can only play easier games like TOG... as I sayd this community is growing with carebears. "Somebody doesn't know how to play a game and blames everyone but themselves. There are currently 3 templars in the top 10 on the ladder, at least 1 of them is using a version of that build that you couldn't pull off. GG. TehHammer is not a crime! To get the discussion back on track here...
I'm trying to decide whether I should 1h and focus on shield abilities (easily reached from Templar) or go for a 2h with armor/energy shield. What are the pros and cons of choosing shield vs armor vs energy shield? I've been trying to play my templar as a kind of melee elementalist, but I'm taking a ton of damage (esp. from gravel spitters) and this is making me rethink my initial plans for a 1h like this: http://www.pathofexile.com/passive-skill-tree/AAAAAQUBAQJxYAqoMR0QTvZSERDhnheHlYcbjaSSG85OTR0Rr7Qfl4AtJFifLSiCm_gs3Zp3MyR0TTinpUtF3w1rRxHwileu4Mda1W1XXQvBKV2tb69lEXK1ZxrsAmfuCep1DyH_dbjG6LRmrg2nu0nSqzAq4_6L4q7lY9BUm_Aqxf8VHDfv9OUtsGyktLPUfJOqBTpWgMkz1dOuomrO9_XvrelxrpWEki7udu7Pn8ZUlI2o-JLYmIji61YnY9szIriX1McGqhZ2BuSv3A4= | |
cant reiterate what a terrible build this is. Level 52 and merc is impossible. You're basically single targeting everything... Rabbit = no cred henceforth.
