Dear GGG: You brought over a MASSIVE mistake from PoE1 to PoE2 and it hurts everyone! Resistance?!

Totally agree with this point too. Resistances are just like this thing "you have to have"... so you gotta figure out which pieces of gear to get it on so you aren't getting 1-tapped. It's just a stupid wall with very little thought put into it. POE2 was supposed to be a fresh start, but they screwed up right from the beginning on so many things.

That would ironically make them weaker. Armor in PoE is much like Armor in Mount & Blade games. It can just outright deny damage from very small attacks but any big attacks like giant bosses punching you with massive fist will go straight through the armor. Resistances are direct elemental damage mitigators, so they're WAY better than Armor.

Yes

Make them weaker and BALANCE AROUND THEM BEING WEAKER

Technically GGG has in the past had ways to make armour apply to elemental damage at various levels. Even now in PoE2 EA the Heatproofing notable on the skill tree makes 25% of armour apply to fire damage. It would be nice to see similar modifiers appear over the course of development. I don't think GGG would be able to cleanly transition resistances to be replaced with armour though. That would take a dreaded amount of re-balancing. I sure as hell wouldn't want to be given that task and I'm nerdy and super into game balance.

Don't make armor apply to resistance. Make resistance work like armor.

Uncapped rating that translates into % reduction with diminishing returns

Oh yeah I want that. Just one thing I want to point out though. Armour is actually not a pure diminishing returns formula. Armour specifically factors in the damage of the enemy hit compared to your armour rating. The armour formula is a weird in between of a percentage reduction and a flat subtracted reduction. The percentage reduction shown in your character stats is actually just an estimated value against non-boss enemies' attack damage values that match your character/area level.

But doing it the same way as Armor would only mean Resistances now work against multiple small sources of Ele damage but huge Mother of Filth poison jump would completely ignore your Chaos resist. That would be a nightmare to balance.
Get rid of the one-shots

Found a belt that I would like to use instead of my current one, but I can't because then I would have about 10% fire resistance that is "too much" and would instead be missing about 10% lightning resistance that are absolutely necessary to have the way everything is balanced around now. Without easy and accessible ways to fix resistances, this is horrible. It would help to have a way of doing harvest mods (change fire resistance to lightning resistance), and being able to replace runes in socketed items.

These would be just band-aid fixes though, and completely overhauling the resistance system would definitely be the better solution.
