Has someone made Phys Blood Mage work?

I'm having an absolutely atrocious time playing Phys Crit Blood Mage. I was under the impression it is one of the intended ways to play the class but I feel so severely underpowered. I'm focusing on the Bone skills, physical damage, crit rate and crit damage. The tree feels extremely scarce for viable nodes. So do supporting skill options.

I'm currently Level 30 at the beginning of Act 3. My DPS is around 190. My friends, playing different classes, are all somewhere in the realm of 400-500 DPS. And playing truly feels like a slog. The playstyle feels odd, constantly slowing down and charging up, having to do that multiple times per pack even.

Does someone have tips on how to improve this? Or alternatives for the Blood Mage? The class feels very shoehorned into something that doesn't even work.

Literally the exact same experience for me. Minions just seem underwhelming in general. Most are subpar to begin with compared to the Arsonists, and they are inferior to most every other class's potential that I've noticed grouping with a Sorc and a Ranger. Then when you add in the fact that BloodMage doesn't synergize with minions at all and seemingly shouldn't even use them from what I can tell really makes me question why it was a Witch ascendancy. Been underwhelmed with the Witch, and especially the Bloodmage so far.
I don't agree with you, I close all the content quite easily, at the moment I'm on the first act XD only in hard mode (51lvl), and in the 3rd act I have dps 500+, the skill tears off solid pieces from bosses

Would you mine sharing what you are doing then? I'm having the same experience as OP and curious what skills you are playing to make it feel smooth.
When you get absolutely tired of making bone thing work, you can try my bloodmage build:

You put flame wall, shoot sparks, press nova, sometimes auto frostbolt comes out from cast on ignite, you keep 3 elemental ailments on target 4ever and get massives +dmg bonuses from having ailments on target and later you add elemental bleed from bloodmage ascendancy and spec + bleed chance/magnitude clusters that you have for your bone crit and later you try to increase crit as much as possible.

I'm playing with Phys as a bloodmage, and it's been pretty chill. Just got done with the second trial, so a bit ahead of you I suppose?

Biggest thing is getting decent weapons. I'm using a wand with siphon to generate power charges, it has about 70% spelldmg and 1 to all spells. My focus (yeah, no minions around here with a sceptre) has 60% spell dmg, 50% phys spell dmg and +1 to all spells.

Currently running bone cage with bigger AoE and crit, and bonestorm with brutality, faster cast and pierce. When bossing I take the crit from bone cage and throw on storm.
