Campaign vs Maps
" I agree it isnt difficult for the players who have played the campaign over and over again, but I have to keep an open mind for those new players who it might still take several days to get through the campaign and if GGG made it skipable those players would also use it and then they would be at endgame with even less knowledge then they would have if they had to do the campaign. Also once you do it a few times, white maps and yellow maps start to get the same feeling when you are leveling alts. Where does the skip end? Once you are able to get gear and skills white, yellow and red maps are pretty much a walking simulator as well. |

Forced to slog through the campaign is always gonna be one of the worst parts of PoE.
Its the equivalent of having to slog to max level in WoW every expansion. This new campaign will be fun for exactly one play-through, if that, and then its just years and years of boring ass mobile game-esque time gating to get to the fun part of the game. I quit so many leagues nowadays simply because slogging through the campaign for the millionth time burns me out before I even get to the part I like. Eerily similar to how I burned out in the last WoW expansion. |

" The campaign acts as the power fantasy of progressing your character from zero to hero. The endgame is what you do after that. True "casual" players (think genre agnostic gamers) would look at PoE2 the same as any other game they play: the campaign IS the game. The gist of the "owning their soul" remark imo is if they entice a player to keep playing beyond that casual mindset then they cease to be a casual in the sense of immediately moving on from PoE2 to the next game that piques their fancy. |

" I've edited my original post in a way to hopefully make it clear that I'm not advocating for a campaign skip, but maybe you didn't notice that yet. The point of this post is to consider the question of how to improve upon the campaign experience, not to advocate for a skip. I would say that people suggesting a campaign skip don't understand game design. Like, if you think content is not enjoyable enough that you should allow players to skip it, then why have it in the game in the first place? On the other hand though, the fact that anyone suggests a campaign skip implies that the campaign could be better, and after all, that's part of how PoE 2 was born. " While it's true that the campaign is that kind of fantasy, I don't think that endgame is simply what comes after that. Ultimately, the endgame has become its own campaign, with a story in it and everything. However, there's a certain style to how the the endgame plays out which is more fun than the initial campaign. What I really wanted to talk about in this thread is the way that you access progression and game challenges, which is pretty much turned on its head in endgame compared with the campaign. Instead of the campaign's system where you fight a boss in order to get to higher level content which allows you to level up, in endgame you're using the content which allows you to level up to get to the point where you can succeed against the major bosses. My idea about this is that humans being the goal-oriented creatures that we are, find it more enjoyable to farm gear/xp in order to reach a goal than to have the ability to farm gear/xp as the goal. Like, at any given point throughout the campaign, the best way to improve your character is never to stick around in the area where you are currently. It's always better to simply get further in the campaign because higher level gear is always better. |

GGG have been pretty clear, and consistent, about the importance of keeping the campaign as a major part of progressing a character. Jonathan in particular is adamantly against campaign skipping. They're not going to be adding it, which means there is no meaningful discussion to be had here. Starting yet another thread on the topic is not going to change that.

After 10 years and 11,800 hours, I do not like "running through" the Acts. Typically, I do it once a league now. I also enjoy rebuilding my standard characters: levels 90+, lots of gear, lots of currency, lots of everything and a one map run atlas reset!
And, for the record, I do have 2 characters in Setters. "Gratitude is wine for the soul. Go on. Get drunk." Rumi

" So you're suggesting in the campaign to grind to the point of overcoming a boss for a given act? It sounds like they are kind of encouraging that anyway. I think it's a bit tough to balance around new players and those that have gone through the thing 10000 times, though. Maybe one thought: in the recent Ziz gauntlet some of the added boss mechanics were fun. Would be neat to be able to opt in to that type of extra difficulty possibly with extra rewards along the way. Off topic: god I hope they update this decrepit forum soon. I feel like I'm debugging code whenever I quote someone with 3+ nested quotes. |
