Its probably fairly equivalent but there are times where not being able to do any real damage yourself and the minion proc rate being poor means you get well and truly rinsed so I felt it was worthwhile.

You can probably craft a really GGG staff with recombinators if you wanted to go super expensive too, I usually choose options like that cane because they are a bargain and that's where I find my entertainment in the game - taking a bargain far.
