He was Meligaros assistant and lover Raulo who sacrificed himself as a test subject, Meligaro named him Fidelitas for his loyalty and honor. He's probably mourning Meligaros departure.
Ask Helena in the village about Fidelitas for a longer version of what I said after killing him.

this...
maligaro and fidelitas were gay lovers

When seeing this topic I was already wondering when someone would mention that they were gay.

I wish the storytelling were a bit better in PoE. there's plenty of interesting stuff in there, it's just a chore to pull out even basic information that gives us context for the story. I think that it's great that details are tucked into optional dialog, but basic things like how names fit into the timeline of Wraeclast has to be pieced together from obscure dialog across all acts.

There's also the issue of story progression and character motivation, but that's a separate matter.

I suggested a while ago that they make unique maps that have boss fights with people from the lore. I think it brings a something more to the map concepts other than just leveling and item hunting. I don't think anyone liked or saw that suggestion though lol

The most common response to talking about the story is "what story?"

I like the Dark Souls-esque approach to lore - minimalist, and you have to actively be searching for and deciphering it, but it's a good payoff when you do. Extra super awesome bonus points if the deciphered lore has a gameplay effect (e.g. you fight a dragon, the description of a relatively unrelated item casually mentions that the dragon is blind, you can wear a ring that makes you silent and the dragon doesn't know where you are any more)

The most common approach to story is to open your mouth wide and wait for the spoon.

Some of us, after some time (or just by ourselves) realise that, in fact, there is no spoon.

And we proceed to search for the story on our own.

And shall you search, you shall find.

The most common response fans have to criticisms of storytelling of a game they like is pretending that anyone that criticizes it just wants to be spoon fed.

I really like GGG's approach to lore in this game; having an NPC mention a thing and then suddenly realising it connects to something somebody else hours of gameplay ago is a great feeling.

It would be a lot less stressful if at least some of the lore was more obvious and plainly presented, but like in so many things, Path of Exile is a game that you're expected to play through many, many times. That means that (a) there has to be at least some lore that only becomes clear after several playthroughs, and (b) people on subsequent playthroughs need to be able to quickly skip or avoid the lore-fragments they've already heard.
Nice to see my old thread was worthy of a necro. Originally posted before the lore from Helena was available, it was simply an exercise in speculation. Now, I'm gonna lock it. =^[.]^=
