For whom does Fidelitas mourn?
I've been wondering about Fidelitas, the Mourning. GGG doesn't generally just pull stuff outta their hats, and I get the sense of some deeper back-story to this boss monster.
Fidelitas comes from the Latin, and means faithful. To look at it another way, so does Fido, a classic name for dogs. This wretched creature mourns for something. Now imagine, a hybrid monstrosity, cobbled together with the dark science connected with the Chamber of Sins. Something has happened to his creators, and he has been alone for a very long time. I suspect he is possessed of a not-too limited intelligence (Fidelitas has some human characteristics), perhaps without the benefit of much formal education, probably lacking a normal life experience, and clearly unaffected by the passage of time, in any case, being left behind after the calamity that took Wraeclast. Now think about the Strange Machine, and how it affected Greust, and his fellow tribesman, before him. I think that, using techniques he observed in the "laboratory," Fidelitas cobbled together, to the best of his ability, a transmitter, in an attempt to contact his missing masters. Greust, being a descendant of the fallen Empire, might be tuned into whatever wavelength Fidelitas tapped, thus causing his nightmares. If your dog could dial out on a phone while waiting for you to come home, don't you think he would? ='[.]'= =^[.]^= basic (happy/amused) cheetahmoticon: Whiskers/eye/tear-streak/nose/tear-streak/eye/ whiskers =@[.]@= boggled / =>[.]<= annoyed or angry / ='[.]'= concerned / =0[.]o= confuzzled / =-[.]-= sad or sleepy / =*[.]*= dazzled / =^[.]~= wink / =~[.]^= naughty wink / =9[.]9= rolleyes #FourYearLie Last edited by Raycheetah#7060 on May 10, 2013, 11:28:53 AM

Personally, I don't think it is operating the machine. Instead I believe that when the machine came online (for whatever reason) the guard for the machine, or an old creation that is somehow connected to the strange machine, also came online. The real question is whether Fidelitas had a body originally or if it is just an organic machine that used the corpse of the first person that was lured down there before Gruest?
It is also possible that Fidelitas does not truly "mourn" but that this is a reference to its operation without a true purpose because the previous scientists are long gone. In that case "Mournful" would be a reference to its servitude to the old operators and how it will never see them again. Just my view on it. :) They said I was mad! They said it couldn't be done! But now who's mad?!?! Last edited by Guadagno#2062 on Jun 12, 2012, 9:22:00 AM

Another possibility is that he might be trying to revive whoever he is mourning for.

Maybe he's one of the last living Vaal, and he's just mourning the fall of a once great empire.

He was Meligaros assistant and lover Raulo who sacrificed himself as a test subject, Meligaro named him Fidelitas for his loyalty and honor. He's probably mourning Meligaros departure.
Ask Helena in the village about Fidelitas for a longer version of what I said after killing him. |

This is actually one of the most interesting quests I ever took up in this game. You could see a lot of depth in the story of the monsters/villains. That some of them were once humans and that they became like that because of complicated tragedies. It makes their deaths deeper, sadder and more satisfying (despite the slightly bland combat I had with Fidelitas). Each monster has his/her story to tell like
Spoiler
Merveil's hopeless romance, Brutus's desperation, Hillock's social injustice and Fidelitas' sacrifice
Spoiler
Fidelitas' story is that of a homosexual affair (apparently as of now)

I wish the storytelling were a bit better in PoE. there's plenty of interesting stuff in there, it's just a chore to pull out even basic information that gives us context for the story. I think that it's great that details are tucked into optional dialog, but basic things like how names fit into the timeline of Wraeclast has to be pieced together from obscure dialog across all acts.
There's also the issue of story progression and character motivation, but that's a separate matter. IGN: Iolar

" I suggested a while ago that they make unique maps that have boss fights with people from the lore. I think it brings a something more to the map concepts other than just leveling and item hunting. I don't think anyone liked or saw that suggestion though lol |
