I explained it back in my Ancestor 40/40 feedback thread. A lot of reason why I didn't do 40/40 in the past is because of running into challenges that require very specific conditions or are too difficult for my build to complete and when I come across them, I burn out and give up.

Ancestor was the first league that I felt I could manage them, thanks to a build that was strong enough and wasn't very expensive (poison SRS). Before I played poison SRS, I was running more expensive summoner builds such as skeleton mages and before that, cold skeleton warriors/archers. And the sheer cost of getting these builds at full power for challenges burned me out as well.

However, it wasn't just manageable challenges that helped push me to 40/40 last league. Sanctum was a significant help. I love roguelike games, so Sanctum was the league for me. Not only did it give me a way of producing a lot of currency doing something I like, it also allowed me to reach level 100 for the first time ever by farming the safest league in the game. Last league was also the first time I successfully reached level 100 and I felt, for the first time, that I may be able to take on the challenges.
PoE players: Our game has a wide diversity of builds.

Also PoE players: The [league mechanic] doesn't need to be nerfed, you just need to play a [current meta] build!

MFers found strength in their Afflictions. They became reliant on them. I am not so foolish.

First gotta say My thoughts on the league are about in line with what your experience was.

I have dumped probably close to 150 - 200 divine into my zoomancer (about 400 if we consider what the gear pieces are selling for right now)

And I only got comfortable doing timed content with the wisps recently. and this is AFTER making sure I took any atlas passives that made that easier ( incursion with the double time node for or slower breach opening and closing are basically mandatory unless you have a bull shit build)

I out right ignored legion and speced out of breach when I was done with it. Generally speaking there arent many summoner builds that have good clear. srs and animate weapon (once the ball is rolling) are basically it since most spectres are kind shit again (even hydras did not feel that good)

One word of caution since you did mention zoomancer is that some of the core gear pieces have basically lost their economy entirely.

for example even a mid tier zoomancer hat with low rolls for minion damage, hypothermia , +2 all levels are absurdly rare now. my next upgrade at this point is basically a mirror of ghazzys zoomancer hat. Not because my helm is even close to being as good. but because there are now few to no options between that helm my helm.

And given a choice between 1 -2 magebloods worth of currency for a fucking highish teir hat I think ill just get a mageblood.

The same is true for the +1 spectre base chest. searching for just 900 armor and a mid roll life mod yields consistently only 3 - 5 results half of which are crafted on which is terrible.

And you need not 1 but 2 life mods to justify getting that chest over a brass dome.

150-400 divines? How horrifying! Thanks for reminding me why I jumped to poison SRS in the first place as it only took me 150 or so to reach my level of power this league. XD

Yeah the biggest problems I have with these kinds of builds in general is that they all seem to depend on this ridiculous helmet Ghazzy came up with. I think the reason they're so absurdly rare is because you're expected to craft them yourself, thankfully something Ghazzy has explained in detail in the past. I think the +1 spectre chest is pretty much the same situation. You may have to just dump a big sum of currency to buy a fractured base and start there.

Never been much of a fan on crafting, personally. It's way too much of a gamble. A sizeable amount of the 100-150 divine investment in my build also went towards crafting and a lot of it was wasted.

I much prefer to just buy what I need, which sucks, because apparently the gear needed for the build is insanely rare and thus unachievable in price according to how I play.

Interesting perspective. To me, challenges only became less achievable over time, but I have to admit that it's not just a matter of whether I can complete them, but whether I want to. Yes, rare spawn challenges like "touch a divine shrine" sucked, but at least you could find them during normal gameplay. Now half the challenges require you to respec your atlas, which I just can't be bothered to do.
