[META] Better Multi-Monitor and UltraWide displays support

WSGF

Path of Exile review on WSGF

As you can see Path of Exile has already a very good support for all kind of widescreen using the best method (Hor+) natively and the HUD displays nice on WideScreen, Super-WideScrenn and 4k Ultra HD. Mutli-Monitor is supported natively too, which is awesome, and eve, mixed Resolution Eyefinity is supported. But the issue comes with the HUD on Multi-Monitor setups (usually triple monitors).

The issue

Here is what the game looks like on 3-monitors:

And here what it looks like on 2-monitors with stash open.

But in practice you can't play like that. The buffs/debuffs/minion count is in the top left side of the screen which makes it difficult to see at a glance, and the health/mana are out of the way on the left/right bottom as well. Same for the minimap and the huge gap there is between your inventory and stash when you open those panels.

The solution is easy, on multi monitor setups center the HUD on the middle like if it was using only 1 monitor.

Here an example for Battlefield 4.

Or for Dirt 3.

To be extra golden, the best of the best, would be that the HUD be customizable so anyone could resize and move the elements.

There has been request for this feature since 2011 (yes PoE was still in beta at this time) so since 11 years ago. I hope it is the last time the community have to ask for it and that it will (at least) be natively supported in Pah of Exile 2.

Please restore 32:9
The single most illogical and inexcusable decision from GGG since 2012.

Fix it, GGG.
The 352nd character to hit Level 100 in Standard
The 82nd character to hit Delve 1000 in Standard
Perfect thread. Thanks for summarizing the issue.
You don't play with overhead health bar? I've done that for years regardless of aspect ratio.

Being able to move UI elements is something I'd usually consider a given. I think they're afraid of duping exploits but games from 1998 had better UI. In fact EverQuest to this day has one of the best customizable UI's in MMO history and the damn thing still works like a charm with any settings.

It supports skins, themes, move anything anywhere, custom mouse cursors, custom icons, disable specific visual / sound effects. The works. Stuff games charge you for now and it's 24 yrs old.

The reasoning they gave for the recent 32:9 support made sense. I get people are mad about it but they just need to fix the client to server issues. It's a data communication problem not UI.

This feels like a prepared statement and not a reasoned response.

Oh, I'm sure it was prepared. I mean there's constant posts about it.
Maybe it's even just an excuse but it doesn't sound like a permanent thing to me.

This is still first a PC game and I'd assume most PC gamers know it's a P2W situation. Always has been. It would be incredibly unwise to think "32:9 too much advantage, nerf."

I dunno, stuff like that is annoying but it'll prolly be fixed next league. I still watch 4:3 shows and played Diablo 1 about a year ago. Looks jank on 21:9 but I wana play so that's how it is.

Hello! Professional software engineer here with 25 years experience including client/server architecture. Can you please state objective software engineering technical reasons explaining your "client to server issues" related to 32:9?

I'll wait.

Hint: There are none.

That's because there is no reasoned response that leads to a conclusion of "32:9 support should be removed from the game". It was working fine, and if there were bugs with it, they should fix the bugs, not remove the feature. There's no excuse for them removing this support after 10 years.

To describe the level of irrational folly on display here by GGG with appropriately descriptive adjectives is to get your post censored for being "too negative", so instead I'll just give the understated euphemistic response...

You got this one wrong, GGG. Fix it.

I already explained the last time you aggro'd me and you had no reply then.
You could have. I have a 20yr expired CCNA Cert so a lot has changed but not basics. I still code mods for games in C+ / Lua also. So it's not like we can't have a conversation about it.

I mean the game is not coded to deal with it. They're preventing a problem.

It's not like me screaming at Netflix for 2 years to finally support 21:9 because that's the native aspect ratio of movies and they were just downgrading it for the sake of 16:9 users.

Sir you have absolutely zero idea what you're talking about.

I ran the game at 5120x1440 with ZERO issues.

Based on the information given. It would seem I do.

You might not have noticed a problem but there was. I see it all the time developing.

Serialization is how their servers communicate to the client what objects are where. By having larger than intended range you're increasing their server memory bandwidth usage.
This would be the case if it rendered properly or not.

With more player usage it lowers the quality of the game for everyone. Not just you.
They simply need to improve their engine and/or servers.

Was it a big enough issue to shut down support?
I don't know. I'm not on that side of the table.

I mentioned an option that helped me for years with overhead health bar. Mentioned I still watch / play old 4:3 stuff. Made a criticism that their UI is worse than a game from 1998 then stated the reasoning at least made sense. What do you want from me? Keep posting about it. Maybe that'll quicken a fix. I just don't see why you aggro me when my post is clearly not bias.
