Server providers for South-Africa

I wonder if there's anything on our side we can do to secure a server like this for SA? It seems to still be very much in testing / in the air.

I've spun up some very limited testing in South Africa so we can explore the feasibility of some different options.

You can access this by typing SouthAfrica into the gateway selection box.

  • There's only around 100 instances of capacity there currently.
  • Don't expect it to be reliable - caveat emptor.
  • We may take it down periodically or change things around.
  • It's set to put new instances on Frankfurt when it's full or offline.
  • This is very early/preliminary. Anything permanent (if this even happens) will be a while away, so temper your expectations.

The OP mentioned Cool Ideas, don't overlook them, they're quite a big ISP here in South Africa, with proper hosting infrastructure, and HUGE supporters of growing local gaming in both South Africa and Sub Sahara Africa, they'd host your service for free, so if money is an issue, I'd definitely reach out to those guys.

People think we have lions walking around outside and we live in huts down here. (We actually have lions outside and do live in huts, but there is pretty good fiber internet, too!)

We've had a pretty alarmingly quick expansion of fiber in SA. I woke up one morning with 200/200 fiber, amazing, and I'm in Parys, Free State, middle of nowhere!

Omg this is really exciting news and it feels so good to finally have sub 180/200 ping, I really hope this sticks I've been waiting for this for years, and you guys are pretty much the first devs to even try, most companies wont bother even though there is alot of us South African's beggin for it and starting petitions and what not. I fully support this and will 100% be playing the game more because of this.

I have been asking for this for so long. And its finally happened. I guess this league will see my return.

I had given up on POE due to the frustration. Now i can experience that frustration in real time.

Thanks GGG

I recommend everyone who can, buy a supporter pack or something, they can see it's from SA, I gladly support companies who support us, feels good. Going to make a point of it to financially support them every month with something.

Feels so crap to pay money to some of these games companies who just ignore us.

If you can't afford to support financially, please post a link to this thread in any local gaming groups you have, just to raise awareness, let's make the POE Springbok server stick!

It's been a thrill testing out the test server with a few friends of mine. It's incredible to see how much quality of life exists in lower ping environments.

Actions such as 6 linking items allows you to delete fusings in a minute or 2 instead of having to wait 0.5-1 sec between every single fusing orb as the server stops you from clicking while it is trying to update the item. Moving objects in and out of inventories, trading and so many other in-hideout improvements have actually made us enjoy the trading process.

I dont even think I need to mention the game play improvements. Going from having to get a carry to do Sirus reliably due to rubberband, to doing him deathless has been a real eye-opener and reassures me that I am actually decent at the game and can do content given a stable environment to engage with it.

I'm already dreaming of being able to play flickerstrike. It has been literally unplayable in the past as the desync can literally span 3-4 screens.

I hope that the testing proves a success on your end and I am excited to see the future of PoE. Low ping has improved my enjoyment of the game exponentially and I will wait patiently as all the issues are resolved
2757.4 Hours playing PoE with 180ms ping to UK realm

I hope the server testing proves valuable and that we can keep the gateway in ZA, this is going to make such a difference to how we play the game!

Thanks GGG!

Chris said last time they check they could not find a good server provider for hosting in South-Africa. Playing with +150 ping is really frustrating

I made a list of new provider that came online since then:

1. Amazon AWS in CapeTown
2. Microsoft Azure is now available from new enterprise-grade datacentre regions in Africa based in Cape Town and Johannesburg.
3. IBM Hosting server.
4. Coolideas.co.za (I recommend talking to these guys. They are the one of the biggest fibre providers in South-Africa. The owners themselves are also gamers and they communicate with us via a forum. They solve all the issues for their gamers and they are open to hosting the servers for you guys if somebody can be in contact with them.) connect@coolideas.co.za or on the forum : https://tinyurl.com/cnveb9su

I really hope you can find a server provider for us we really been looking forward having servers in South-Africa for a while now.

I hope this reaches the right person

Thank you

Who is the absolute LEGEND who actually brought up the ZA server thing to Chris and co in the first place?
