How can I get Orb of Alchemy faster?

The main fascination for me with PoE is the build diversity and the whole sockets and gem system on weapons and armor. Without an easier way to do serious crafting experimentation I don't see my interest in PoE lasting even 1 year if I'm being severly limited in getting any quantity of crafting orbs. I'm not wanting to multi-box to get more quantity (I beleive it is a form of hacking PoE) and my solo playing always equals lower quantity of items.

Thanks GGG for looking out for us solo players .... NOT!!!!

I've player PoE 98% of the time solo. I've not had any trouble getting currency except for mirrors (only got 1 in CB). Solo play is fine, doable and enjoyable.

Side note: 50% (probably closer to 75%) the item you use your alchemy orb on, turns out to be garbage. Ty scouring/chaos... you are my friends :)
Don't wait for 20% quality drops to use the alchemy orb recipe. Use scrap/whetstones.
i never bother with vendor recipes, i play solo, and not really for that long.

i have 55 alchs in my stash....just sell good uniques and quality gems that you find and trade fusings for alchs

easy

20% Quality on a White, Magic and Rare item of the same type sells for 1 Alchemy. Keep those quality rares you find :)

The only problem with that is I only have 2 items with +20 quality in all my playing time. Maybe if I play 1 character all the way through Merciless at higher levels I'll get more +20% drops.
If you find one with 15% quality, leave it unIDed, you'll spend 5 whetstones/scraps on it, then get an unIDed blue of the same type, and spend 10 whetstones/scraps on it, then get a white of the same type and spend 4 on it. You'll spend 19 whetstones/scraps and get 2 alchs. You don't have to wait for perfect quality rares, just kind of close ones.

Or, if you prefer to ID your rares, grab 2 whites, quality them both up and then use a transmutation on one, this is less efficient, but you won't miss out on good items.

Or if you really want to get crazy, start stashing rare items (pick a slot or two, I do helms and chests) and fill your inventory up. When it's full, dump them on a mule account (or several). Then write a program to match those items across all of the accounts (or just use PoE Helper).

So then what you're saying is that you want rare orbs, that make white items rare to be ... common?

Does not compute.

Farming is a fact of life in this style game. I don't do "farming runs" I just do "leveling/quest runs" and pick up all the blues and above I find and ID them to get alch shards.

I'm doing the same and at least that's ok. I just think that GGG needs to do a revamp on the vendor crafting system. It currently sucks. There needs to be a lot more options. D3 also failed with the Blacksmith and Jeweller crafting system. I know there will always be no-lifers in any arpg game that will burn through the game and hit the limits and clamor for more difficulty but that is an extreme and for the majority of arpg gamers we just want a good challenge (which PoE provides in spades in the monster bashing department) without all the other crap that makes playing unnecessarily tedious.

This.

Use that wiki recipe list as your bible. I think it may be slightly out of date after the chaos recipe change, but it will give you the secret to getting armor scraps and blacksmith whetstones. I collect ALL superior white items. Why? Because I can turn in 40% worth of quality in one category (ex. one 5% weapon, one 15% weapon and two 10% weapons = 40% quality) for an orb of the appropriate type. As of right now at level 50 I have some 60+ extra scraps/whetstones. If I was concerned about alchs I would try and save up a white/blue/rare of the same type and use those scraps to get more alchs.

This.

If you aren't already doing it, ID the BLUE items you come across, in addition to the yellows; items with II-bonuses, +gemlevels, and chaos resist will net you ALCH shards. And you shouldn't be hurting for Wisdom scrolls, right? ;p

You can make them yourself.

Whetstone and armorer's scrap are relatively easy to get:
Armourers Scrap x1
armour (unidentified or white, 20% quality) x1
armours (combined quality of at least 40%)

Blacksmith's Whetstone x1
weapon (unidentified or white, 20% quality) x1
weapons (combined quality of at least 40%)

So keep picking up quality items, stash them, sell in batches. Save those close to 20% for upgrading.

Edit: I should have noticed there are more pages to this thread. -_-

Thanks TehHammer for the tip. I'll check out the PoE Matcher utility.

Collect superior armor or weapons. When you collect enough items to equal +40% armor or weapon, turn them in for a corresponding whetstone or armor scrap. Save 34 of these and you can get 2 alchs per white, blue, yellow item of same base type (20% quality, not id'd).

Edit: doh, someone above beat me to it.
