My apologies for droning on... Even though I'm also normally painfully verbose, current events end up forcing me to seek to fulfill socialization needs "online." And, couple that with my keen interest in the subject of animal cognition, well one can see it's all a recipe for even more unwanted text on teh interwebz. :)
I think it was best said that humans are a dog's perfect environment. =^[.]^=

You may not be wrong, though maybe not for the same reasons or occasion. That's, normally exhibited as, uh, err... "self-pleasuring" behavior. Though, he could just have an itch or enjoying rubbing his chest across the carpet. :)

But, dogs have been seen to "mimic" other dogs. Intentional or just associated play behavior or not, it would seem that having some sort of empathy and a Theory of Mind is very important for animals that tend to live in groups. (Whether or not it's due to something more complex, I wouldn't know.) I am not aware (ATM) of any mammal studies involving gregarious animals that don't appear to have some basic capabilities, there. It's apparently pretty important/common.

Dang, I read too "clinical" at times. :) (Deleted all the rest of my OT garbage I crammed into this post. I gotta get outside or sumthin'... :))

PS: Will dogs inherit Teh Erf?

I actually wrote a bit of a short-story on that, but couldn't decide where I wanted to go with it. No, it wasn't "realistic," but at least it was fun to think about. :)
Dogs won't inherit the Earth, because without humans, dogs would be lost. Cats, mebbe. Rats, possibly. Raccoons are strong contenders.='[.]'=

Haaa cool dog. One day? They already do at our house. Sleep all day eat right and get to play whenever. If I get reincarnated I want to be a dog

Probably i am more an introvert type, but even i am starting to feel the weight of current situation. I can only imagine how hard it is for extroverts :)

I am comfortable, either way, kinda... But, for extended periods a lack of meaningful social contact has detrimental effects on anyone. We are a social species, after all.

On the OT subject of dogs: I love dogs. I don't have one, though. It's a bit too much responsibility for me to assume atm. The rewards, though, are pretty big. :)
