They've done that for quite some time... they seem to think that video games corrupt the morals of their youth. We'll see how trying to control them with curfews and "social credit" works out for them. My bet is that experiment will fail, and people of the young generation will look back at it and laugh.

The US tried to do something similar with youth in the 50s and created the hippies.

It's not so much an issue of morals as it is a matter of health and social issues. They already have an iron-clad grip on controlling what game content is allowed, and particularly so after their blanket ban on virtually all game releases for nearly a year.

But there is a very substantial and growing number of young people in China who can't and/or won't do anything but play games and simply aren't interested in doing anything but playing games. You have to keep in mind that the total number of gamers in China already rivals that of the entire "West" combined, so it's not a small problem.

About 6 years ago or so, before it even became as big of a problem as it is now, they started running some boot camp-type programs for gaming addicted youths. Some of them were a bit soft, many of them were quite harsh, and all of them bore some similarities to things like gay conversion therapy in the US. Needless to say, that approach didn't work even a little bit.

So over the past year or two, the CCP version of "kid gloves" have come off and now they're exerting more strict and direct control to reign in the problem.

One of the more generalized views is that people who aren't productive have nothing to contribute to society, and people who have nothing to contribute to society are harmful to society.

LULZ

That's China for you.

To be fair, Korea has had rules like this regarding video games for a very long time afaik, but China .... You know, population problem ? Let's restrict one child per household !

A bit less of a population problem and a shitton of other problems created by the 'one child policy' ? Fine, let's restrict it to two children per household !
( gigantic /facepalm for China everybody )

Not capable of regulating a healthy society ? Let's just put hard limitations here and there, I mean, it will solve everything right ???
( not enough hands and heads to facepalm strongly enough for this with everybody using the forum together I think at this point ... )

It's ridiculous honestly.
I'm glad I gave a look at this thread, I ended up on yet another very sad / ridiculous / Idontknowwhattofeelaboutthis piece of information about China.

Won't be long till nanny state regulates gaming for us too. People already demand the ban of lootboxes and death sentence for "scammers" because apparently reading and taking responsibility for your own actions is not how we roll these days.

Oh huh. Looks like I might get a probation one of these days.
