POE loot vs Diablo 2 loot

Hi all,

This maybe a rather contentious issue, It's just my personal view and perhaps may even make the game more addictive than it currently is. I welcome sensible feedback, please post what you think on the matter.

D2, most of us would have played it at some point and had that amazing addictive loot farming quality that kept me hooked for 4 years. The trouble is, I still think the D2 loot system is currently still the best.

I don't know how to explain it, it's wierd, but the D2 loot just felt alot better and more exciting to obtain. I was really hoping POE's loot would be better, but as it is it's along way behind. Don't get me wrong, there is a nice sense of 'wow I found a rare' when you do, but nothing like finding a 250% grandfather sword from pindle.

So what to do? Make specific loot tables for the main bosses? Add a similar system D2 had with the uniques ( exceptional, legendary etc) add set items that give benefits partially / fully completed, make farming the bosses and intergal part of loot hunting as it was very exciting thinking potentially what may drop?

It's still early days and perhaps it may get a large overhaul, I'm only going on what I see on the forums and in beta chat in game.

So, post what you think could improve it, or if you think it dosen't say also.

Thanks for reading.

i was under the impression that uniques were already in game... i know i've seen orange items linked...

and as you say, the game is still early in the making which means they will tweak stuff like this

I think we need far more non-generic items. Diablo 2 had a lot of uniques that were pretty average statwise, but just finding them was enjoyable.

Perhaps a new item tier, inbetween unique and rare?

I think the loot needs some bias towards your class/stats/passives. It is really rare for me to find useful items, sometimes even white ones, because of the huge variety in drops.

D2 had a lot fewer item types that mattered, especially armour, so it was not really much of an issue, but this game definitely needs something to ensure that you don't have to rely predominantly on buying or trading items just to get a useful magic (or even white to upgrade) item.

It doesn't need a lot of bias, but definitely some.
For me the biggest issue is not being able to 'sell' items that are of no use to you. One of the funnest part of D2 was knowing that if I couldn't use an item I could at least sell them. This to me meant that alot more items in the game were useful and thus item drops were more meaningfull. Although I'm only in the very early part of the game, loot is almost meaningless since I know that virtually all of it will be useless.

I know this feature is being added later but until then, it's hard to guage what's wrong since the entire loot system hasn't been implemented.

Certainly some good points here, yes we will have to wait and see.

There definitely needs to be some tweaks in the loot system. As the OP said; the thrill of hunting items should be as great (or greater since it's new) as Diablo 2.

I'm level 34 and haven't seen any unique drop. And the rares that drop are usually not usable for my marauder. This might stimulate playing more classes, but I think continuity is very important.

Loot is one of the most important aspects of aRPG's like these and it shouldn't be -too- hard to get right.

I'm at lvl 20 now, and haven't seen any Uniques drop my self. Not sure if that's normal, but you'd expect to maybe get at least one or 2...

I think Set Items are another aspect missing from the system. These class specific sets could encourage some interesting/effective character builds as well.

It would be nice to have super-powerful items that are above Uniques as well, like runewords. I know there's crafting, I just don't know how powerful these crafting items can get. Anyone have experience with this yet?

My 15 maurader has been using the same 2 hander for ever it seems, not enough 2 handers in the gane and finding it increasingly tough to kill mobs as quick as I did 10 levels before. So no sense of getting more powerful as the loot isn't keeping up with my levelling pace it feels like.

I have pretty much just been finding items with at least 3 connected slots, turning them into whites, getting their quality to 20%, and then changing them into rares. While that is enjoyable, most of the stat rolls for rares are pretty useless. There definitely needs to be a lot of uniques/set items and I am sure they will add them.
