Passive Tree Crashes Game

This appears to be a random thing, but it's already happened three times to me so let me explain:

Opening and closing the skill tree a few times within the spam of about a minute has crashed the game.

I've tested this out about a dozen times using the same method and it's only happened said amount of times thus far. It makes planning builds and looking at gear a bit worrisome.

Also, when the game crashes in this manner, all instances reset themselves, even if I log back in within 10 seconds or so.
Very strange! Does this happen on all characters, or just a specific character? I'll investigate, though so far this has been the only report of this.

I get this a lot too, it's usually about a 75% chance that i'll crash opening my passive menu.

@Rory, i'm wondering if there's not a memory issue, as once the passive tree has been opened I usually don't crash opening it later on, but it's hard saying as I tend to get disconnected from your servers every 10-15 minutes when (for some reason) my FPS flatlines (Though my latency is fine)

What I believe is happening in this instance is my game seizing up and your server throwing me out to try and keep me from dieing.

I'm wondering if it doesn't have trouble allowing my computer to share RAM with my on-board graphics card. (I'm on a laptop.) I had a similar problem in SW:ToR and was able to reduce this by running windows XP SP3 compatibility so I might try that.

EDIT: I'm still seeing the passive skill tree freeze, but i'm showing marked increases in FPS and notable less disconnects so far.

On an interesting note the passive tree tends to crash more-often in areas other than town.

I have no evidence of this yet, but I think I know what is causing this. It is simply lack of RAM. I am on a machine with 2 GB and if I go into a few different zones and run around a bit and then open the map then the game gets slightly sluggish. Opening and closing the passive skill page adds to this (particularly when you zone all the way out).

Eventually the game can stop responding for a few seconds and due to the 5 second time out it can disconnect you to the login screen.

Seems like a good old fashioned memory leak. I will run a few tests and update this in an hour or so.
That sounds likely! I might suggest putting -gc 1 in the path in your shortcut, like

"C:/Program Files/Grinding Gear Games/Path of Exile/Client.exe" -gc 1

Which should reduce the amount of data the game caches in ram - It'll mean longer load times between areas, but may prevent crashing from running out of RAM? Not entirely sure if that's how it works, but it's worth a try.

So far I cant find any evidence of memory being the bottleneck. For a small development team (no offense intended) the client is remarkably good at releasing memory. For me the process will use 1500mb upon entering a wilderness area, but I cant even push it past 1650mb if I try.

I will edit my shortcut as advised and see if the sluggishness persists with the skill tree and map. If it makes no difference I will try to monitor what the cpu is doing with the process/game.
I have 3gb of ram, while shared between my computer and the processor, it should still be enough to run the game reliably. I'm not sure what else could be causing it though, for reference sake here's my system specs.

Manufacturer: TOSHIBA
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) II P340 Dual-Core Processor (2 CPUs), ~2.2GHz
Memory: 3072MB RAM
Hard Drive: 307 GB
Video Card: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series
Sound Card: Speakers (Conexant SmartAudio HD)
Operation System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (6.1, Build 7600) (7600.win7_gdr.110408-1633)

The problem is likely to do with memory fragmentation, rather than actually running out of space. That 1650mb may be spaced out over the 2gb allotted space in a way that it doesn't play nice with other things. This is something we're going to fix, but we'll also try and get one of your cards in the office later in development so we can have a hands on investigation if fixing memory fragmentation doesn't solve your problem.

Rory, so your saying running a smartdefrag on memory might help things? Or is it something to do with the game itself?

*EDit: Memory defragger, smart defrag is for the HDD. got my tools mixed up.

Yeah, it's something only we can solve, and it's not a simple thing :s
