MY THOUGHTS ON 3.9 PATCH NOTES

Hello community,

I wanted to give all of you my fair thoughts on the 3.9 final patch notes and my understanding of how these changes effect our beloved "OneShotKill" build, which I created this guide for.

I try to unveil every impact hiding in complex 3.9 patch notes.

Preamble: Sadly once again GGG decided to nerf several mechanics in this build. Due to the new "Ballista Support Gem" (former Ranged Attack Totem Support Gem), the general playstyle will differ from what we are used to. But let me share my thoughts, because not everything is pitch black for "OneShotKill"

Some recommended gear options in this guide will need to change, to adjust to new mechanics. But let´s try to unfold the published notes and take a deep dive into the mechanics:

1) Skill Tree Changes: There will be a new Skill Cluster ("Watchtower"), that will grant an additional Ballista and Ballista damage =>> this is a positive

2) The new "Ballista support" will grant two additional Ballistas (1 by default) =>> this is a positive

3) The new "Ballista support" has less damage: (Supported skills now deal 50% less Damage at gem level 1 (from 30%), up to 41% less at gem level 20 (from 26%)) and less attack speed =>> seems like a nerf, but you can summon 3 more Ballistas in total (+2 from the gem and +1 from the skill tree = 7 in total) =>> so I won´t judge here yet. I need to calculate it first in PoB.

4) The default placement speed for Ballistas will be much faster than before. As we don´t have the exact numbers yet, we will assume that the total time spend to load out the maximum number of Ballistas (we have now 3 more in 3.9) is the same =>> I think this is a positive

5) We will now place the Ballistas within melee range, this counterfits the idea of the close range bonus on the "Chin Sol" bow (therefore you might consider using "Lionseye´s Glare" with the "Far Shot" mechanic & "Hit´s can´t be evaded" which makes room for other rolls on for example jewels, since we are not bothered to stack Accurency and instead of Point Blank on the Skirmish Quiver, you should aim for +1 arrow corruption on it. Also in general the "Point Blank" mechanic is nerfed from 50% bonus to 30% Bonus at close range. I don´t have a final thought on this yet, I assume we will lose some damage here but on the other hand, we don´t place totems into monsterpacks, so the Ballistas won´t die as quick as before, since we place them in melee range and far away from the monsters (also to get use of the far shot mechanic).

6) We will benefit from the new shock mechanic, introduced with 3.9. With the Yoke of Suffering, we will do more consistantly better shock damage on enemies. =>> this is a positive

7) Elemental Hit Skill Gem nerf: Elemental Hit damage nerf at level 20 is 23% (new elemental damage: 2017 // old elemntal damage: 2481) =>> this is a bad negative, but I think we all knew that Elemental Hit with the special way of scaling its damage was too powerful. The nerf hurts, but elemental hit is far from useless now - trust me.

8) Access to stronger "super support gems" (combustion, ele damage with attack skills) -> "Awakened Support Gems" =>> this is a positive

9) You can quality up your jewelery (rings, amulet, belt) with special quality currency. This will give you new ways to scale / improve your damage. =>> this is a positive

10) We still have the annointments on the amulet, a very powerful mechanic that will boost the damage output...

CONCLUSION:

To be honest, I´m a bit indetermined right now. I have to wait until I can calculate the damage output in PoB. And we need to see how it feels to summon the Ballistas at melee range. I will try this build in mid-season, bacause the real life pre-christmas struggle is real for me :-)

But keep in mind: The damage (total damage) you see in PoB is the !!!damage of every projectile!!! So lets do a bit math and some assumptions: 1.5 mio total DPS according PoB in 3.9 with really good gear = 7 Ballistas x 4-5 projectiles depending on +1 arrow corruption on quiver and bow (in combination with 100% hit chance with Lionseye´s Glare) and a big boss target, so every projectile in the projectile cone will hit, is still bonkers DPS... IN NUMBERS: 42-52.5 million Deeeeps...

PS: My level 100 Scion (I wrote another guide for a Scion version/iteration) with a legacy Chin Sol, double corrupted frostferno and very great gear gets (without annointed amulet) 4.1 million Deeps per projectile in PoB without shenanigans (4 totems with 4 projectiles each = 65.6 million Deeps, if you assume, every projectile hits (at close range rather easy).

OneShotKill will still be a fairly viable build, just the playstyle will differ, even if a boss has 100 million HP, damage potential will be quite feasable :-)

I wish all of you a lovely league-start and only the best of luck!!!
Have a wonderful christmas time and I hope some of you will try OneShotKill in 3.9...

After Christmas I will join the league and test OneShotKill myself.

Cheers

Thank you for all of this analysis.

Would it be possible to edit the main post with all of it if you have the time? Like the progressions, skill gems and so on?

Thank you one more time! The build was great when I played it before. Probably my favorite one I've played so far in PoE.

Hello buddy,

right now it is just not pissoble for me to update the guide in depth.

Due to the fact, that I need a full implementation of all new features from 3.9 in Path of Building (like 3.9 skill tree, reworked skill gems, reworked items, and so on), I can´t update in an accurate way. And I made the couple of past leagues the experiance, that it takes up to a week into a new league, that PoB is fully updated with all stuff, I could do it somewhat around the 20th of december, but there I am on chirstmas holiday with my family and I have no idea how I can manage to update it before the christmas days. But maybe other guys here will give you some input until I update the guide.

Cheers

Then all I can wish for is Happy Holidays to you and your family!

Cheers, pal.
Well after reading the notes & comments, I am still going to try it. Worse case, I make it to maps & farm some gear to play something else.

The main thing that has me worried is totem placement. It was vital for clear speed.

I had already made this build in 3.6 and I really liked it. Now that you're back, i'll be waiting for the build upgrade, i intend to start from arc totem and then switch to elemental hit.
Happy Holidays to you my friend :)
How would this do even without the corruption on the helm? Still better than a 6L?
Hey, could anyone send a 3.9 updated pob link? :) Just for passive tree
