a lot of people actually take summon skitterbots due to them being very good for league starter builds for the extra damage if they don't already go for lightning elemental dmg

however with minion builds it's hard to put anything else tbh
you could go for vitality, or go for impale dmg on minions with dread banner if you have decent impale but that depends on what minions you go for as well i think and your build overall + impale chance

Thanks. So if I'm reading you correctly, the shock aura of skitterbots is essentially a quite useful utility tool, but most builds will eventually replace it with something more specialised? Whereas a minion build is likely to end up with spare gem sockets and doesn't have anything else better to use?

also the minion-boosting passives are not for summon skitterbots only they impact all of your minions, that's why we take them.

Yep, I get that. I meant that the minion-boosting passives don't actually boost the primary purpose of the skitterbots, so despite being minions and fitting thematically, they're no better in a minion build than they'd be in any other build.

That makes sense, thanks.

But also raises a related question. Again, I may be missing something, but it looks to me like the minion-boosting passives don't do much for the skitterbots, other than make them run a bit faster and do a bit more token damage, the main benefit of those auras isn't impacted. If enemies taking a flat 18% increased damage is a big enough benefit on its own to make it into this build, shouldn't skitterbots be a part of almost every build, since it seems every build can get that flat 18% increase out of a single blue gem?

Apologies for the new player questions, and apologies if I'm missing something obvious. I start a new game and a new character, I immediately want to start theorycrafting, so just trying to figure out why some of the non-obvious or less intuitive choices are being made.

also i have to say that there are a ton of builds who can't afford going summon skitterbots because they probably have better damaging auras

flesh and stone
blood and sand for example

they are huge auras

yes, most of the time they will replace it with better auras that they can run after getting some currency and investing some currency into the build

exactly, that 18% can add up the more damage you have
there are 2 type of defense you can go for
kill the boss/mobs instantly, or kill the boss/mobs slowly but w/o dying and surely

in the minion army league starter for example the latter seems to be the one
you have a shield which gives chance to block as well which comes in really handy
and i forgot to mention that 700 hp reg i believe is really nice as well
nvm

I need to keep note of this kinda questions!

Actually originally guide had more explanation, but I keep hitting word limit nowadays! :(

@gooseq has good answers for you :)

basically skitterbot is an easy way to get extra damage because minion builds don't need lots of mana (except for MoM build!).

If you look at Flesh and Stone it's similar to skitterbots for mana cost and damage.. It has 35% reserve and also blood stance "Enemies Maimed by this Skill take (13-16)% increased Physical Damage".

Hello there! New PoE player here so itll probably be dumb question. I am trying to ditch Raging Spirit both during leveling and minion army phase (not gonna lie i dont like the spell at all) and replace them with skeletons. I wanted to go Skele + Impale + Melee Splash. As 4 gem im considering Multistrike or Minion Damage but I am not sure which of those will give me more dps. I found topic about this on the forum but its from 2014 so I assume a lot changed since then. Unless i should ditch Impale as well and use both of them?

PS. Thank you for the great guide. Tried couple of them and this one is very easy to follow and gave me best results.

Thank you!

It's easy to change to skele for levelling: summon skele, minion damage, melee phys, multistrike. We don't need melee splash because spectres and zombies will help with clearing. Actually I also use multistrike all the time for endgame build because gem swapping is annoying :P

I don't recommend impale because its physical damage only and for late game cold conversion is stronger (except for aura stacker build!).

The new levelling guide and league starter build will be spectre + skele.
I already recorded full A1~10 SSF playthrough so just editing video now. Plan is upload it on Friday!

If you don't have the craft, just buy body armour already with it!

When you get the craft, then you can combine with:

Consecrated ground (6% heal):

or

Nearby enemies are blinded:
