This seems pretty iffy at best. How will schools benefit from this? That needs to be answered before any good schools will consider giving out these kinds of scholarships. If it's only bad schools doing this then it's not really very exciting.
Well more people getting an education is a good thing I guess
I dont see any any key!

Isn't there significant prize money for esports these days?

And let's be honest: an esports 'athlete' is probably going to do more with a higher education than a football player...

If there is a prize pool then the college students could not participate

NCAA rules state that student athletes can not be paid or receive compensation (beyond education) for their sports

Heck every year some guy gets in trouble for charging for autographs lol

Football and basketball tend to be very lucrative due to ticket sales and merchandising

Im not sure one can really sell gaming in the same way

though its possible that Gaming may not fall under the jurisdiction of the NCAA as it is not typically considered an athletic competition.

Perhaps the universities could make money streaming events?

at any rate most university sports programs lose money but are supported by the massive amount that football/basketball make (and at some schools Hockey)
I dont see any any key!

So they're probably trying to anticipate a shift then. Might work, might not. Probably worth the minimal gamble.

well like I say 90% of the sports programs dont make money anyway so even if its never successfully monetized some universities may support it especially those that specialize in technology
I dont see any any key!
Higher education is an ENDANGERED ANIMAL on life support...! MOST """degrees""" are USELESS and OVERPRICED...! FACT
