Completely missed the 2nd curse. I've tweaked the tree / items / skills.
The Shadow completely beats the scion. Over 100k aura dps, at lvl 100.

I didn't know you had to link any of the supports in the chest.

Mine weren't linked as you suggested (was totally unlinked), so I did, and pob showed no change in death aura dot dps. Are you sure? Is pob incorrect? Or am I using it wrong? thanks

There are only 3 support skill gems that must be linked. Those are the ones noted. Other than that, the rest can be not linked.
