RF selfcast vs totem
With the change to Vaal Disciplin in 2.6 is there any reason at all to go self cast RF over totems?
Lets assume you got pretty good endgame gear with 20k ES as selfcast RF. Thats 10k DPS without any modifiers. As a Totem user, with a lvl 20 spelltotem, the totem should have 5312 base HP. Lets add some totem HP: - Spire of Stone (lets assume +21% which is easy to reach) - Totem life on tree (51-71 % depending on which nodes you take) - Totem life from other jewels (lets assume another 48% which can be achieved with 4 jewels) - Soul Mantle (50%) So thats a total of 190% increased totem life, putting totem to 15404 HP, or if you go without Soul Mantle, your totems are at 12748 HP. Almost 13k totem life without using any item slots. If you decide to go without Soul Mantle, you could use a lvl 21 spell totem and maybe a +1 body armor, resulting in a lvl 22 spell totem, which puts it at 6444 base HP, resulting in 15k totem life too. To reach this high HP+ES you have to have some pretty good gear and sacrifice many points on the tree (ok, its not scrificed, as it boosts your survivability too). You have to invest heavy into lifereggen and max fire resist as self cast. Those ressources could be used to further increase your damage. For example use dual Doryani for +250% elemental damage and if you are running soul mantle you could use double Kikazaru (for 80% reduced curse effect on you) and Self-Flagellation (10-20% increased damage per curse on you), for another 100% damage increase (curses last 9sec and its pretty easy to maintain at least 5 curses), which both is not possible as self cast RF. ok double doryani might be, but i doubt you can reach 15k HP/shield if you go dual wield doryani. So please anyone convince me to go self cast RF, as i made a toon to go self cast and used totem while levling, but just realised totem is superior to self cast. Totem guy: made of used tissues.
Selfcast guy: can facetank a bameth spawn in a triple ele mod map. Also, it is faster to clear with selfcast, since you can move with it, the totem version either forces you to not clear half the map or to place extra totem for stragglers. |

1. You don't need that extra Damage against trash, so as Krenderke mentions, hardcast RF is much faster at clearing garbage off the map. Don't have to place a totem and wait for it to cast RF, you just zoom by and loot appears.
2. Spell Totem comes with a 25% Less Damage penalty at the best of times. 3. Hardcast RF only needs a 4L, which means you can slap RF into an Essence-crafted glove or helmet for 30% More Damage (glove/helmet). The Totem build needs that large amount of Increased Damage to get back on par. Last edited by Vipermagi#0984 on Apr 4, 2017, 6:39:59 AM

I have an RF totem guy this league and he is far from made of tissues. He's one of the tankiest builds I've had actually. He can do any map mod. I can switch shields as I need. I used a kaltenhalt for the Hydra fight for example. Try running a -max resist or low regen map with self cast. You might be able to sustain it but you aren't the facetanker you were when you had such high regen. And you can't do no regen at all. I went chieftain but if you want to give and take more damage Berserker is an option. Chieftain gives me endurance charges for my totem kills and life regen, cause nearby enemies to deal 8% less damage to me, and taunt enemies so they don't attack me. And the totem reflects some damage based on its max life. I've had fast hitting things like the essence monsters with those lightning spewing flying objects kill the essence monster by attacking my decoy totem next to him. And unless I'm wrong, the totem allows you to use Rapid decay to help offset the damage penalty from spell totem.

Yeah I know it is not that paper, but just for the record it is less tanky because it is a totem build.
LOWlife RF: tri purity, 14-15k ES, -max and 40% less recovery maps are doable with RotP or constant ruby flask uptime. Life based juggernaut: 26% liferegen with 10 end charges 89% fire resist and 8% reduced eledmg taken. If you do the math you can do -12 maps with it without flasks. 90*.92*0.23=19% regen to sustain you have stil like 7% to overheal you. For normal maps u need 6% regen to sustain it, so yeah you could do 60% less recovery easily. Last edited by krenderke#3861 on Apr 4, 2017, 9:30:13 AM
