CI Crit ST HoWA - a Path to 600K+ DPS vs Shaper and 11K+ ES
Hi guys,
I lately got a few questions after putting this whole char for sale, so I thought it's maybe a good thing to do a short guide for it and make this version more popular.
Concept, Capability and estimated budget
Concept: I believe that a crit HoWA build can scale damage even better than a regular noncrit HoWA build, admittedly with a lot more investment. We use the Pathfinder to buff our flasks. The flasks are up while mapping, making it a more flexible and defensively easier to play (reflect problem solved as well as Taste of Hate for defense) while even increasing clearspeed thanks to Dying Sun's projectiles and permanent Silver Flask uptime. Capability: The build is able to run any content, also Shaper and uber Atziri. However it shines most in fast mapping. Very hard to run elemental reflect maps (Wrath -> Purity of Lightning), I skip those usually unless I just leveled and can risk a death. Budget: Given the gear we run, this is not a budget build. I'd estimate you need about 100 ex in Standard to run this build, more if you want to max it out.
Skill Tree and Variations
Key nodes: Flask nodes, penetration nodes, Master Surgeon for flask refill and Master Alchemist against status ailments because we go CI. Rest is pretty self-explaining. Using a nonlegacy Vinktars means you need Vaal Pact. Given that Pathfinder also helps a lot with the crit chance, I cannot recommend Raider unless you want an even crazier tooltip DPS with less ease of play. Pathfinder Tree, Level 90: http://poeurl.com/bcx2 (Bandits: Point, Point, Power Charge) Pathfinder Tree, Level 96: http://poeurl.com/bcx4 (Bandits: Point, Point, Power Charge) If you go Raider, the DPS is even higher, but flask uptime will suffer a lot and most likely mana issues will come up too. Nonlegacy Vinktars means you need Vaal Pact. Raider Tree example, Level 90: http://poeurl.com/bcya (Bandits: Point, Point, Frenzy Charge) Raider Tree example, Level 96: http://poeurl.com/bcx9 (Bandits: Point, Point, Frenzy Charge)
Gearing and Gem Links
Gearing
Key gear: - 2x Hand of Wisdom and Action. Pretty self explaining. - Skyforths to generate Power charges and prevent stuns. - Rest of the gear is rares. - 2x L4 Enlighten allows running Wrath, Discipline and Poachers Mark on Blasphemy to generate Frenzy charges and help with flask charges. - Attack damage Vinktars does more damage than Penetration Vinktar by a small margin. Legacy is great, if nonlegacy you need to take Vaal Pact in tree which costs you 1 more point. - Dying Sun is mandatory for the additional 3 projectiles it gives. - Helm enchant for Projectile Speed is very nice because it makes Slower Projectiles useable vs bosses and means you can offscreen stuff. Important mods on your gear: - On all pieces of gear, look for Intelligence (keep in mind this also boosts your ES) and resists. You will desperately need those. - On jewelry, gloves and helm, also look for Accuracy. Do not underestimate the importance of accuracy!! You want at least 500 points total on your gear. - On jewelry, if possible also Weapon Elemental Damage and flat lightning damage along with a free slot for %ES. Now the stuff is gonna be expensive ;-) - On chest, gloves, helm you want high ES. I would recommend a minimum of 1300 ES total on your chest, gloves and helm. - On jewels, you want lightning damage, crit and crit multi mods and resists.
My gear as example
Flasks Alternative nonlegacy Vinktar flask Jewels My setup gets a bit over 1K INT, 90% hit chance while being capped without using flasks.
Gem Links
6-Link in chest: Spectral Throw - Increased Critical Strikes - Lightning Penetration - Elemental Focus - Weapon Elemental Damage - Lesser Multiple Projectiles Swap out LMP for Slower Projectiles if you need a damage boost against bosses. Auras: Discipline - Wrath - Enlighten (L4 required, otherwise you need more mana reservation nodes on tree) Curse: Poacher's Mark - Blasphemy - Enlighten (L4 required, otherwise you need more mana reservation nodes on tree) Others: The remaining links can vary a lot. A movement skill plus Fortify, Ancestral Protector, Vaal Auras, a Cast when Damage Taken setup, pick what you prefer. You can see examples in my gear.
Offense: Damage output in numbers
Misleading Tooltip DPS
You can check the true DPS in the next section, but to give you some comparisons you can also see the screenshotted tooltips now. Note that it doesnt factor in the diamond flask, penetration and other flask effects. Tooltip with LMP in hideout (Auras and Golem active): 71.5K Tooltip with LMP in map (Auras, Golem, Flasks, Charges active): 222.4K each at 6 projectiles Tooltip with Slower Projectiles for bosses (Auras, Golem, Flasks, Charges, Ancestral Protector, Vaal Haste active): 335.3K each at 4 projectiles
Path of Building Calculations for true DPS
The tooltip in the game doesnt show the lucky crit chance mod from the Diamond flask we use, as well as the effective damage increase of resistance penetration. So, here are a few more exact numbers for you, using the great tool 'Path of Building' I can really recommend. It also calculates the effective crit chance including chance to hit, chance to crit and double checking accuracy which is the 76% you can see here in the screenshot. Tooltip with LMP in map (Auras, Golem, Flasks, Charges active): 319K each at 6 projectiles Tooltip with Slower Projectiles vs T16 bosses and Shaper(Auras, Golem, Flasks, Charges, Ancestral Protector, Vaal Haste active): 644K each at 4 projectiles Overall, we are looking at more than twice the DPS of many noncrit versions (you can use Path of Building to compare a bit). Also none of my gems is over 20/20, some only 19/20 yet, and tree also leaves many improvements between level 90 and 100.
Defense and Movement
Defense without flasks at Level 90: 11K ES, 75/75/75/100 resists Defense with flasks at Level 90: 11K ES, 84/84/84/100 resists At level 96 you'd have 12377 ES with the tree I linked in the tree section and my example gear, with a bit more DPS. Don't forget we also have Taste of Hate up for physical mitigation. Basalt Flask could be added if you feel the need to, same as Rumi's for block. Movement speed is 115% with Silver Flask, 168% with Silver Flask, Vaal Haste and Phase Run. Even more if you use a Quicksilver Flask.

Videos
As of now, there wont be any videos because I have a kinda shitty PC. You can check youtube though for HoWA builds and imagine what this is capable of with more than twice the DPS of the noncrit versions.
Conclusion
This was one of the most fun builds I played yet. Clearspeed is very good, boss killing abilities also good. I grow tired of it for now, which is the reason why my whole gear ended up for sale. I enjoy theorycrafting and maxing out builds more than playing, which is a bad habit currency-wise ;-) If you have any questions, just ask. I hope this gave you some insights on playing a different version of HoWA. Thanks for reading Janus Edit: Formatting and gear section updated. Interesting take on the howa build.
Pathfinder and raider choices seem extremely close, with one of them giving you infinite flasks(not sure if this is still true after master surgeon nerf, maybe with overflowing chalice?) and the other frenzy charges on steroids. Given that you have legacy vinktars, you might want to consider not pathing awkwardly past vaal pact, and can consider pathing via the extreme right straight up which can open options to those good claw nodes and also an intuitive leap jewel grabbing +1 frenzy and +1 power charge, along with either leech nodes. You probably have to give up true strike cluster but it might yield better results with the crit from the claw nodes (and more leech in case of vinktar downtime). Overall looks interesting and worth a shot! |

" Hey, thanks for the input. With this build you can have permanent flasks up against mobs, but will most likely run out of flask charges against bosses after 3 times flasking if they dont spawn other monsters. Still I think it's superior to other variants because of the additional safety and speed from flasks, IF you can stand hitting 12345 (or, as myself, 1234Space) regularly. About the tree, not matter which path on the right side I take, I end up with less DPS/ES/minimally more crit if at all over my current version, both for the L90 and the L96 trees. While Soul Raker would be a great node to get, we dont really need more leech. If you want to experiment with the tree and gear, feel free to use my Path of Building code. I spent hours on different trees and would be happy about further improvements. IGN: @JanusHuntress
