[2.6] Stormtrooper - Orb of Storms Raider
Good work on adapting it for SSF, the build isn't too demanding on gear but it does require a few key items so I probably wouldn't try starting with it.
I did consider Quill Rain, you get 50% more triggers with it but mana would have been a problem and it didn't have that nifty mana on hit back then, it's a much better option nowadays. I like the Deadeye choice too, you lose some direct dps but save yourself the trip north and don't have to use Carcass, +1 chain should be also enough to get decent coverage from orb. Yeah, mana is a legit problem, for some reason Orb is prohibitively expensive in a high link setup and you need at least enough to cast it and start shooting, that was the other reason for the trip north, you get some mana from it. Going full lightning was a point of preference as much as a practical choice and you kinda have to work with what you got in SSF so there's not much room for grabbing style points. So, I'm thinking it would of course be preferable but not fully feasible in your case, and you won't be gimped much by not doing it anyway. Point blank was a later acquisition because I wasn't too sure about it myself, I also thought it would be nifty to keep some sniping capability. Ultimately, it's a matter of playstyle, I noticed I'm spending too much time at ranges where it would be dumb not to take it, that might differ with another player. Gotta admit I'm not thinking about flasks too much, don't like the whole utility flasks concept and I feel they became too mandatory so it's usually either skipping them or using the first one that comes to mind. Anyway, good luck with it, our takes on the subject have been fairly different so I'm pretty curious how will it all pan out. Wish the armchair developers would go back to developing armchairs.

Well, I'm not too bad on the eyes but you wouldn't exactly call someone of my manners a gentleman and certainly not a lady, not exactly a bow enthusiast either.
I'd say that the build was slightly nerfed in this patch overall, if you consider that making Orb a decent damage dealer is its primary goal. Wish the armchair developers would go back to developing armchairs.

Just my take on this build, also as Ranger.
Dropped Point Blank, one frenzy charge and some defenses (playing SC), but gained a crapton of lightning spell dmg. The main idea being to do dmg via Orb of Storms and not through your attacks. (326% inc. Orb of Storms dmg in my build vs. 120% in yours) http://poeplanner.com/AAYAANkSAABqBAcFtQceCpsM8g5IES8Rlha_HwIj9iaVKwowcTB8Nj02xTfUOkI6WD7PRXxJUUt4TLNNklFHVEdVS1XGVkhd8mHiYqxsjH_Gg9uMNo19jb-VLpeXm42dqp7Eo4qly6a-tDi0xbVIvebC7NAf037UI9gk3ajlGecK62PtP-4O73rv6_DV-_Wio8HzlSAtH-TsdhEQWCycVa5Eq4-mghDfsDsNEQ9-r40Z4BLZX92MtYXvUMG0LX0ILu2DAF4Zjn11_royNBLxFyYtTS9yQdBrkHqE0K0AAAAAAA== Last edited by Quakespeare#2871 on Mar 18, 2017, 6:04:06 AM

" Pretty neat, you ditched PB and leech for stronger Orb. I assume you went for Quillrain? The reason I eventually shifted a bit more weight to attacks is that killing bosses ended up a bigger problem than crowd control. I've yet to try this out, mind you. But yes, going with Quill Rain for now.
Leech is useless if I leave Shrapnel Shot at lvl 1. Do you think my build would have lower single target DPS than yours? Last edited by Quakespeare#2871 on Mar 18, 2017, 7:45:50 AM

Quick update from my SSF endeavours:
I took PB, and Lightpen by now, they're definitely worth it in my version, which focuses more on attack speed, flat dmg and the new wed clusters. Its pretty much what made me have t10-11 under control. 12+ is still very rippy. Especially stuff like dodge/vuln/resist maps. Managed to get a dualcurse boots, so i'm now using poachers' for its myriad of nice buffs, and creating said room for Lpen. Good choice. Also got me a Horror Helmet earlier this week, for 30% more Orb damage. Seemed a really good choice, as other ways of 5/6 linking the orb would increase mana again, substantially. (And require 5+ blue on my Quill, which isnt even linked yet, or a Thunderfists or something, which i dont possess yet either). The Orb is good at killing white mobs, and tickle blues. I still havent got deadeye's chain, and it would be a real boost, but with the gem its not really, damage becomes to low even though the coverage becomes great. Really looking forward to that last trial. Other improvements have been Vaal Haste instead of Vaal Lightning Trap, I've got a two-sip Silver Flask with move speed for the onslaught (I tried the cluster, its good, but up at the wrong times.). I use the Mutewind Onslaught shield on switch for Temp Chains maps (8secs!), got some flat ele crafts now Elreon is lvl 6. Right now i'm trying to fumble a bit with some blade vortex-enfeeble setups, because i still need a little something extra against those t12 bosses. Some endurance charges or something would be nice too. I'm 86 by now and actually in the top 1500 ssf, 19th deadeye, not that its very crowded over here in ssf, but it does do me good how much you can eek out of a build like this. I had my doubts when i was on a 4link with a Thicket and only 4 ascendancy points. Still lots of room for improvement though. My jewels suck, my gems are lvl 19, Haku has to become 7 to roll attack speed on my gloves, still havent got a +1 arrow quiver, said last lab trial. Lots of uniques. Amulet and Gloves could be nicer, maybe essenced. Could also fiddle around with defenses some more, maybe Warmark/Vaalpact could be nice against those tough bosses. I divined The Tempest from 38% to 40 btw, that doesnt cut it. Hopefully i get to try again soon. The Horror Helmet is a blessing for that, because before then i was really in doubt which bow to try and link and get loads of blues on. Now, if i ever link one of those, i'm probably going to fiddle more with cwdt/curse/cull setups. Oh yeah, as a quick buzzsaw type build its also great to magic find low maps with. You can slot in Item Rarity and some other things easily, and fly trough low maps with stones like breach/beyond. |

" Most likely, Shrapnel is what kills bosses for you, and does it well. Unfortunately, Orb would still just tickle it even if it had three or four times the damage I've got on it. The way I see it, trying to turn orb into a boss killer would be a waste of time, not only that it doesn't do enough damage but also limits your dodging when you need it the most. " Now that's a pretty nice idea right there, it really does cost an arm and a leg when you go beyond 4 links. Thumbs up. Yeah, the build really gets much in the finetuning stage and SSF isn't very friendly to the process, getting the right jewels would probably prove a total bitch. Wish the armchair developers would go back to developing armchairs.

Ever try using Minefield or Cluster Traps with Orb of Storms?
I don't even know it it works, but perhaps it could let you have multiple Orbs? |
|
" It doesn't work, the gem description says you can cast the Orb only directly. Wish the armchair developers would go back to developing armchairs.
