/trade 101 : dedicated to help new comers with the game. Answers/Tricks/Mentoring

I still think there should be a PoE Handbook. The channel is a nice thought, but only if we can get some sort of hierarchy in there which allows new players to differentiate between trolls and people who actually want to help.

It's easy for myself to run a new build (as I posted on in an earlier post in this thread) and even though I deliberately did not have any supports on my ST weapon (just the 1.6 fist) and only a decoy totem (no minions) and still kill Normal Brutus in 6 circle strafes with no problem and later have my cold resist maxed out so I mostly face tanked Merveil only needing to side step her ice spear attacks and move off the freezing geysers that what I'm doing and taking for granted is based on 1000+ hours of playing knowledge and attack/defense movement skills is absent in a new player.

I do remember as a new play (way back in December of 2012) that I died quite a number of times at the hands of Normal Merveil until I fully understood the importance of maximizing out resistances. New players do't know this and get frozen to death when they battle her with minimal cold resist. Also, new players (and old alike) don't want to have to look up the stats on every boss to know what resist needs to be at max for the battle. GGG probably loses many players over this (WTF?!... Merveil just killed me.... oh, she deals cold damage so my cold resist should be at max).

Now is a good time for this:

 PoE playing tip
Never stand in one spot for more than a couple of seconds. Learning the PoE art of kiting to avoid taking damage is a playing skill that can never be undervalued. The most common kiting technique is called circle strafing... attack, move, attack, move, repeat, while making a circle around the boss (or any tough to kill creature).

This is a perfect item to include in a PoE 101 primer for new players. Since new player tips/tricks are going to be scattered out in many posts in this thread I think Sexcalibure I'll make a new thread to just keep a consolidated list of these new player tips and then he can link to it in his topic post so over time as we discuss what information is deemed essential for new players to learn at the start of PoE this information is easy to find and won't require poring over umteen pages of posts. We should glean this info out of our discussions and put it in and easy to find/read PoE guide for the new players. We can debate what the important playing tips should be on the list here and I'll update the list on "Wraeclast Beginners Guide to Survival" playing PoE for the first time as needed.

Ok, the /global 101: PoE 101: Wraeclast Beginners Guide to Survival is up. I did The Strand for new plyers. I covered the main features/functions of PoE but stopped short of discussing the Passive Tree as that would seriously make it a TL:DR post and it's not good for new players to have to read too big of a wall of text. We will need someone to refine down to 10 points or less on the passive tree use and how to get the most out of it (very basic do's and don'ts). Then a 3rd post should cover the basics of how the socketed gear and linked sockets allow skill gems and support gems to work in combination with each other for creating a build. Along with the help on linked sockets and skill/support gems it should cover the aura and curse gems, totems, etc. These are all basic topics that we as skilled players take for granted but new players are ignorant on. Another post will need to cover the basics for vendor recipes and crafting 101. There are more but we will need to focus what a new player who never has played PoE will need to know to make it to act 2 and not drop out at Brutus or Merveil.

Please give me feedback so I can add and/or tweak my starting PoE info in the other thread. I could easily have missed something because I take it for granted and a new player may just go WTF? on something that got them killed before getting to act 2. (I hope new players aren't dieing in The Strand).

Yes, organizing the ton of info is going to be critical to the success of this endeavor. This is a worthwhile goal and I sure hope the crappy troll posters stay out.

just a bump, i enjoy 101 more than global or 5055.
plus weve probably given away more lifesprigs than cadiro
Sup Group!

I was quite busy recently so i had not much time to play which limited my implication on /global 101. I was planning to do the minimum for the channel until 2.3 hits and with the new league coming with 2.3 we could go for the big hit since there are a bunch of new comers on new leagues.

Promoting a channel is quite a pain in the ass to do in POE:

-Forums arent visited much and most of the time its not by new players and it would require a constant bump

-Reddit is pretty much the same thing plus we would have to deal with the negative impact that the constant posting would have on the channel's image.

As for now the best way to promote the channel is by spamming global 1 to 10 with a friendly welcoming message.

So i decided to PM Chris and ask him if GGG could do us a favor and promote /global 101 as a Tip on loading screens. It would be nice since such channel has a positive impact on the game and the way new players see the community and their learning curve.

Unfortunately, GGG told me that its not the first time they got such request and they decided to do no channel promotion.

I am still waiting for Reddit's admins answer about adding /global 101 along with global 5055 and 820.

I, the Grand Necromancer, beseech thee... Bring back this, the most useful of chat channels, for those who need it.

No, really though. Can we bring this back? I spent a lot of time in there helping noobs (and even not so noobs) but it died down by the end of the league. Who's willing to jump back in the helper seat when Essence comes around?

It has been suggested few times past years to use a dedicated channel to help newcomers unfortunately i havn't heard anything about something functional.

I tried an approach like that on a 100k subscribers community ( not a game but a game server i managed ) it worked just fine the first hours before anyone started to jump in and say lot of shit missleading fully newcomers. Deleted this feature a week later. Not even mentioning trolls / insults etc ...

In PoE i can clearly see something like that happening to be honest the chat is nearly a 4chan concurent at this point.

While instant answers are greats i think a dedicated forum for newcomers would be an alternative to what you are asking for. It would help to collect aswell frequently asked questions along the game evolutions;

The gameplay help and discussion section is " just fine " but is about the whole game wich is not what we want here.

Newcomers needs are more centered about getting started till they are able to use and understand the pathofexile gamepedia in an independent way.

So what i'm asking here is a moderated forum section with dedicated members to avoid bad and wrong explanations first of all and secondary some rules to follow on how to help them.
I think just giving them a gamepedia link with your explanations would be enough anyway.

Add to that some well thinked community threads updated regulary and i call it a day.

Does these two solutions are a good idea ? On a community tought yes. On a professional tought it's taking the problem in the wrong side, i think making early mechanics and early game easier to understand should be handled by a better ingame tutorial ( optional of course ).
Hf :)

Good idea, you will have to advertise this a lot if you want it to take off at all though.
GGG refuses to give a hand for this, sad...

On another topic

What do you guys think about Changing /global 101 to /trade 101

since we cannot have multiple global opened at a time it would be a nice shortcut to have ie: /global 5055 opened and /trade 101 at the same time. Who uses trade chat anyway XD
