Lockstep Stutter - Latency Spikes
Hello,
I just got a new PC and expected to run PoE easily with it but while in Lockstep mode it proved to be unplayable. While the FPS graph doesn't always show much variation, I really feel the difference. I recorded two videos to show it, in Highgate, the Crystal Veins and the hideout : https://youtu.be/EdmNObblj3E https://youtu.be/ZtfDEL4fGg8 PC specs : Windows 10 64 bits - 8 Gb RAM Intel Core i7-6700 CPU @ 3.40GHz NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Network interface controller : Realtek 8821AE Wireless LAN 802.11ac PCI-E NIC Vsync and frame limiter (via Nvidia Inspector,to 70 FPS) make no noticeable difference. Drivers are up-to-date. Now, in predictive mode the game runs fine but I get desync. So, due to the nature of Lockstep, might the whole problem be related to my connection ? Thing is, the person I live with has absolutely no problem with PoE and we share the same connection, both of us in wireless (I don't have a cable to test). This leads me to my second point : the huge latency spikes. They are very consistent, usually in the same range and occur quite often. I live in Paris and use the London Gateway. Here's an album of the graph inside PoE : http://imgur.com/a/Jddio And here's the Win MTR report for the London Gateway : http://pastebin.com/fDcfQyT1 (And another with google.com as host with no loss : http://pastebin.com/g1T2vaHK ) Predictive is more playable than Lockstep but it varies from time to time. Thoughts on this ? Are the two issues related ? Thanks. Last edited by Atogadp#0230 on Oct 16, 2015, 8:55:43 AM Last bumped on Mar 24, 2016, 6:21:54 AM

Hi Atogadp,
Just wondering if you've managed to fix this yet? I had no problems with lockstep upon its release; I've just taken a couple of months out of the game and returned to find this exact issue. Ping stable at ~20, FPS graph not dropping below 250 but consistent, predictable stutter when using lockstep. I'd be interested to know if you managed to resolve this. Regards TLM |

From the WinMTR I see something that could be problematic:
ae-4-90.ear1.Paris1.Level3.net - 28 | 306 | 221 | 0 | 4 | 23 | 9 | 28% packet loss is not good. Thing is, it's right in the middle of transit... Since the loss doesn't happen inside your home network, it will be difficult to fix yourself, but it seems to happen before it arrives at a point GGG could do much about. May want to contact Support directly to see what they say. "I would have listened... I would have understood!" - Scion Have you removed Asus ROG/GameFirst yet? From the primer regarding that one packet loss hop:
Many routers on the internet employ ICMP deprioritization; dropping ICMP packets in order to guarantee resources to more important traffic. If the packet loss does not continue through to the remaining hops in your route, the loss can most likely be attributed to deprioritization. Chances are, as it does not carry forward, that's what is happening there. Hi there,
A few months passed, along with a few updates and with Perandus I thought I'd make a new char. I started on my girlfriend's PC and we went to level 70 without any problem, still runs smoothly on her laptop, WIFI. I wanted to join in with a character of my own but I still get the issues described above, even though I got an ethernet cable in the meantime. Here's a WinMTR with the Milan gateway showing no loss, same as London gateway. http://pastebin.com/KvK8FWhB Nothing really changed. |
