State of Exile Community Podcast - Episode 40 - Featuring Developers Chris and Carl

Watched it 3x now :-). Great show keep up the good work and thanks Chris and Carl for taking the time to come on.
@RichMoney, the reason from GGG previously was unfair advantage, economy concerns, etc.
Trade
Good to hear about improvements to trade coming in. It seems like a huge disengagement to leave the game, use a third party website to auto find an item I want on the official forums, then go back to the game to try to contact the player, only to have the player not be there, or the barter to fail.

What I would love is for there to be an NPC in each town which would act as a gateway to these methods.
This would at least feel like it's happening in Wraeclast. (You could have a find and retrieve quest to do to open this vendor up to holding and taking offers for items for you. One stash tab per dificulty, per character that has completed them in any given league.)

Racing
Racing improvements are cool, i liek the idea of Asynchronous solo races, and party endless ledges. I too would like to see some different start points in the races, GGG have the ability to scale the monsters difficulty already (endless ledge style), all they need to sort out now is undoing all the safety coding that normally stops people "gaming the system".

Challenge leagues
Good idea to consolidate the efforts of designing these to be more similar. stops the players from feeling they're missing out, and allows GGG to put more effort than would have been in either hardcore or standard version, by having one <super theme>!
You guys forgot to mention that you spoke about fishing.

I was watching this LIVE and when you disconnected the podcast right at the moment Chris was getting into the Fishing secrets, let me tell you, the Chat went INSANE! What a great way to end a pod cast and what an awesome podcast to watch while casually playing PoE. Love it!

The elephant over there is the trading system. Please make some form of statement about your plans for it. I don't trade, and wont even with a system in place, but I'm concerned that GGG has been silent on this issue.

They gave a statement about their plans for trading in this very podcast. Near future is planned better support for third party trading apps. For example, making sure offline/online status updates instantly! And Mid to long term they have mentioned things like cross instance or asynchronous trading but that's a while off as it's going to take a lot of development time.

Funny how you will almost break your hand in excitement to that. This is where GGG is losing me. No to anything even similar to AH but new improved interaction with third party apps is ok and fine. It will feel like AH but it ofcourse wont be one because you have to alt tab and whisper a player. Can't have that build into the game, oh no.

So... Uber Malachi? Another race season talk, but not Pvp?

I guess you and the 6 other people who play PvP in PoE will have a to wait.

Just because you're not good at pvp doesn't mean you have to be negative and try to ruin it for everyone else.
cool
Nice to hear about trade improvements

Nice work ziggy and zeno!

Honestly, if the devs are reading, Act4 is cool and when cruel is gone I think Ill be able to enjoy it for what it is a lot more, but the questing part of the game is always going to be 5% of my play time. Atm that leaves 95% maps, and as amazing as the map system is its been 95% of the past 2.5 years on a system that by itself has probably had 2% of the dev time the questing section has had. I dunno how the community feels but as an individual its always going to be 95% endgame, if we can get racing in there so its 65% endgame and 30% racing then awesome. But for me thats where GGG should be spending serious time, endgame and racing. The quest game provides the assets for endgame and race systems, sure, but if half the time spent making an act was devoted to racing and endgame the amount of playable game I have for that 95% of my time would be multiplied by 10.

Ah, the wonders of the endgame, making obsolete the previous content for veterans...

Look, the early game is 5% for you. For other people it could be 25%, 50% or 75%. You can't just put everything there without taking care of the former. It doesn't mean mapping shouldn't receive more effort, just that the early game deserves to be rethought so people like you stop taking it as a filler, and acts have more value after getting to maps.

For example, consider this:

Please make leveling new chars less of a boredom already..
Not sure if anyone else feels like it, but leveling through the game after so many times, is so bloody boring, but that's mostly because you're entitled to some generic build until you have more options later in the game.

See? Some care must be taken for levelling to make it something that it's not filler. Read the link in my signature for a more detailed discussion of this.

doesnt matter what you do to questing, if Im playing the game a lot Im going to hit maps on day 2 or 3 of a league and still be playing maps on day 60. Im not alone in that, far from it. So far virtually all of the content creation has gone into questing and not endgame, I say they should spend some time on endgame and you jump right in telling me no, they should spend more time on that first 2 days play that has already recieved basically ALL of the serious dev time so far and by its very nature will always be 5% of the time invested into the characters I play.

Yes it would be nice if it wasnt filler, leveling 1-70 is never going to take that long though, how much more time are they going to spend developing just that bit? If I play a character for 1 week Ive already spent more time in maps than the quest game, if theyre looking at their player base and thinking how do we keep players playing for more than 2 or 3 weeks at the start of a league then sorting out how shit leveling 1-20 is when youre done with that in the first hour of character is not giving the game any longevity at all. How do you make sure people are still playing 12 weeks into a league? By spending as much time developing what they do for weeks 2 to 12 as theyre spending developing what they do in week 1.

Im aware other people exist thanks, Im not concerned with how much of their game time is spent in quest zones one by one to be honest. Theres an awful lot of people for whom endgame/racing is 50%+ of their time spent and the quest part has already received the vast majority of the development.

There have been suggested great ideas to make mapping more interesting but my personal favorite is that they would add new mode to maps whiich would be "+1-5 map level"

If chests can have it why maps would not? People could play their favorite maps longer!
