[2.0 updated] Shmizz's hardcore perma-freeze guide
Oh man I was having such a fun time playing this build in Tempest. Small dinky mobs were getting frozen all the time and it was a nice change from the typical flame totems. But alas, it came to an abrupt end. I ripped to The Hundred Foot Shadow unique mob in the Aqueducts. Even with 3.2k life and arctic armour, I just got one shot by her body slam due to lagging slightly.
That being said, I am going to be rerolling the build and doing it again! This time I will probably stick with flame totems a bit longer since I definitely felt the lack of currency when I was trying to iron out the kinks in my gear. Would Skill radius effects (like Amplify or Blast Radius) apply to this at all? I don't really know how skill radius works except that it sounds like AoE effect.

Hello, just have a question. Thinking about starting a second backup character in Tempest and was wondering how much damage do you do with this build? What do you see it capping out at? Thanks.

" This is definitely a viable option even for hardcore, however I don't like totemic mastery at all. My original incarnation of the build had totemic mastery but I ended up dropping it for the celestial judgement wheel instead because it was more point efficient. I never felt like the totems ever needed the extra tankiness so I was only looking at the damage numbers between the two and ended up removing totemic mastery. I strongly dislike removing any amount of max life to get more damage. I personally felt like the build had plenty of damage which is why I decided to convert it to hybrid to get even more tankiness instead of staying pure life and going for more damage. As a crit build freeze chance is not an extremely important stat. Crit chance is much better because every time you crit you freeze AND you do more damage so the freeze lasts longer, so I think the elementalist wheel in templar is quite inefficient being only 8% ele damage per point with a mediocre notable. " I didn't get sovereignty in original build because it was simply not necessary. You can afford discipline and both heralds without any amount of reduced reservation. heralds are not auras so they do not benefit from the increased aura effect nodes which means sovereignty only gives a little bit of energy shield, less energy shield than an energy shield node. Even if you go for reduced reserve you would still need to spec into mana nodes to place down two totems with relatively high mana costs so I don't consider sovereignty to be useful at all. " Freeze pulse is tagged as spell, cold, projectile. It is not tagged as AOE and therefore gains no benefit from increased area of effect nor area damage. "I haven't gotten the build to an extremely high end game point yet, so I simply don't know exactly how high the dps can go. I hit around level 83 with self found gear and my dps was approximately 9k per totem with rain of splinters and full power charges. My gear was extremely crappy at the time and I'm sure with good gear you could significantly more than double that damage, but I can't say for sure exactly how high it will go. While leveling, any spell totem is very weak, which is why I recommend not using freeze pulse until around level 60 when it really gains traction. Once you get freeze pulse off the ground, farming up through early maps is a cake walk and with totems your clear speed can be extremely fast if you prefer the drop and keep running method of gameplay. " Thanks for the answer! I knew about crits dealing freeze, just not that it would work so well. Definitely makes sense. Being in tempest, I definitely want as much tankiness as possible! |
|
Thanks. That clarifies & a lot & helps me avoid wasting skill points.

" Had a similar idea when I was making a pure element dmg build (no totems). Glad I saw yours though, cause I realized some mistakes I was about to make (like not realizing catalyze was for weapons & not spells). Also, are you avoiding ES or just not worrying about it? | |
" The reason I don't have much ES in the tree is because the swap to hybrid takes place so late in the character's life span. The build has to be almost completely reliant on life up to level 75-80. Thus while leveling I got as much life on gear as possible, which often meant sacrificing energy shield. Once you reach the late game and have decent to excellent gear, energy shield % becomes much more attractive than life % and you can spec out of life nodes to pick up energy shield, however I didn't include that in the guide because it is needlessly complicated and I believe players who do reach the extreme end game with really good gear can take that decision into their own hands and decide for themselves.
