[2.1] Dual Apep's Chaos Crit - Stapling Chaos to a Level 1 Spell (Draft Spark Totem tree up)

I have actually done chaos spark totems before. I tried it in bloodlines. The damage was fine, but single target was lacking. This was before any of the buffs totems are getting in 2.0 of course. Chaos Spark totems with duration is a legitimate way to scale the damage.

The problem is, once again, you have to use an extra link for Spell Totem, so you're essentially down 3 links just for the initial setup of Spark - Spell Totem - Added Chaos. Then you need to add on either Pierce or Fork. You can avoid using the gem and get Pierce off the tree, but it's fairly expensive point-wise because you also need to head to the left of the tree to grab duration nodes. Duration nodes were the best thing that happened to Spark Totem and you cannot skip them. I would scale a build like this with running Righteous Fire because it's incredibly hard to scale with conventional means. Eldritch Knowledge would probably be an all-star here.

I think RF is a great route, but I think you might be able to get away without it to do a Pierce-in-tree path. It's pretty reasonable to get if you want ES/evasion nodes or are doing Acrobatics. I've been playing around a lot with Acrobatics casters lately and I think lvl 1 Chaos is a good example of a caster than can benefit now that EB is not useful in the same way. (Trees pre-2.0 and mocked up quick.)

Obviously, I'd have to rerun all the math again to figure out whether the cast speed you go by is better than some of the crit or damage. There are other options like Totemic Zeal, Whispers of Doom, or whatever that could solve QoL problems I'm not yet seeing.

I'm not sure that losing a link to Spell Totem is all that bad though. With a GC setup, you are doing GC-AoE-Conc-Chaos-Life Leech-[Crit Damage/Echo] right? Not needing leech kinda frees up that spot (not counting the possibility of cutting leech with Hugry Abyss, that is clearly better if we can work it). With Spark Totem with tree/jewel pierce and jewel projectiles, you'd be using something like Spark-Totem-Chaos-Crit Damage-Duration-[???/Faster Cast/Faster Projectiles/Slower Projectiles]. Looking at it again, maybe Fork is not so bad in that last slot. Are there other links I'm forgetting about?

Maybe Soul Mantle could replace the need for the Ancestral Bond and you could use an IR/Grace based defense or Acrobatics that goes down further along the right side of the tree like my original build.

I'm interested in seeing either glacial cascade (if it can make it through beta without a massive nerf) or flame surge. I've never built flame surge but it seems like it has many issues. can't wait for the release of 2.0 to finally start doing some testing. i'll post what i find in this thread.
IGN: Standard League - Dark_Captain
Ok, so huge changes to base crit in the beta.

Biggest news for us: GC got nerfed to 5% crit. However, Tendrils, Ice Nova and Spark got buffed to 6%. Tendrils is an efficient spell and Ice nova has a great AoE. GC might still be fine, but not as dominant as it was.

My biggest interest in this iteration is Spark Totem, as it got a buff to base crit and also the totem nodes got buffed hugely. Apep's is super hard to scale in the tree, but generic totem nodes are actually pretty decent for us if we can use them. The crit from Shaman's Dominion and its cluster is exactly where we want it to be and great for us, as our totems cost very little. Shamanistic Fury is also really great. I could see shifting the tree more leftward to take advantage.

Maybe something like this:

Probably want to expand the use of jewels once we figure out where exactly those land.

Edit: Oops, forgot about duration nodes. This tree is very rough and needs more life:

Yep, some major changes. I am leveling after the beta wipe as a Lightning Tendrils based character. I haven't made the switch to level 1 tendrils + added chaos yet, but the additional crit helps out a lot. However, it's worth noting that the AoE got slightly nerfed, so I do believe that the AoE nodes are 100% necessary for Tendrils.
Tendrils seems well positioned.

I'd be interested to know whether the AoE nerf might make Concentrated Effect considerably less desirable. Tendrils-Echo-Chaos-AoE-Crit Damage-Leech might be better than a link that includes CE.

It also makes me want to figure out a way to get Carcass Jack into the mix; the Acrobatics/Grace route looks even a little better now.

I think it does. The AoE is pretty underwhelming and Concentrated Effect makes it even worse.

Also Glacial Cascade is still solid, for those who wanted to stick with that. I'd say it's still arguably the top choice, though it's less clear cut now.
Off the wall suggestion, and definitely not something I would have considered before the shotgunning changes, but what do you feel about EK? Damage effectiveness is the same as FP. It does have a slower cast speed, but it does not require support of LMP or GMP and naturally spreads along a wide area. Crit chance is also 6% now, and the AoE nerf of Lightning Tendrils might allow EK to compete.

EK's not a bad idea, especially with tree and jewel pierce at 55% for minimal investment. I'd kinda tossed it aside ages ago because FP was so much better with a similar attack pattern, shotgun, and auto-pierce. The crit makes it a bit more reasonable. I'll have to give it a try. I'm actually having some trouble thinking of all the links I'd use.

EK-Chaos-Crit Damage-Leech-Faster Projectiles-Echo-[support]
Slower Projectiles seems counterproductive in the same way that GC's CE does.
Maybe Faster Casting, PCoC, or Hypothermia? I could see Hypothermia being a thing with HoI and maybe Fingers of Frost? Even leech and Faster Projectiles don't seem set in stone.

I think I'm going to build a Projectile/Acrobatics, a dual totem (spark), and an AoE/Lowlife variant once 2.0 hits. Most of the projectile spells are going to work with basically the same tree, so I think I'll be able to try out several of them pretty interchangeably. EK is going to the top of the list to test for that build, I think. Seems very reasonable now; cast speed is very easy to fix when you're not worried about mana. The AoE build has more spell choices at this point. The spark totem thing will need its own tree, but life seems to fit better due to the placement of the duration nodes. That one may end up working better with a leveled gem though.

My thoughts on a bunch of potential spells. Stats are from http://cb.poedb.tw/us/, so they might not be totally accurate.

EK: The recent cast speed buff is huge, and makes EK probably the best spell for the build currently. Low mana cost, 6% crit, and scales off of projectile damage. Might need to use Faster Projectiles and/or Pierce for faster clear speed. Completely obsoletes Freezing Pulse. Possible links: EK - Echo - Chaos - Crit Multi- LL - FP.

Spark: Similar to EK with more of a pack clearing focus. Damage effectiveness is a bit low, but cast speed and mana cost are good. Requires pierce, projectile speed, and increased duration for clear speed. If you get duration from the tree then you can't use any movement skill. Possible links: Spark - Echo - Chaos - Crit - LL - Pierce.

Flame Totem: Requires level 7 for 3 projectiles, meaning mana cost sucks. Might require duration from tree. Crit a bit low. Lots of gem choices since you don't need Echo or LL. FT - Chaos - Crit - FP - FC - Minion/Totem Res.

Flame Surge: Supposedly has a 0.5s cast time. AoE coverage sucks, and requires some burn source for best damage. Not convinced.

Glacial Cascade: Amazing damage, countered by low width. Conc Effect simply reduces your AoE too much, but Inc AoE reduces the overlap of the damage circles. Low crit (rip). GC - Echo - Chaos - Crit - LL - FC/Conc/AoE.

Ice Nova: Trades damage for AoE. Conc is usable. Slow cast speed, good crit. Not much else to say. IN - Echo - Chaos - Conc - Crit - LL.

Ball Lightning: Damage effectiveness is low but Slower Projectiles buff is great. High mana cost. Can't use all 3 of SP, AoE, Crit unless you drop LL, which you probably can anyway with liberal application of Promise. BL - Echo - Chaos - SP - AoE - Crit.

Storm Call: Very fast casting, can use Conc (especially with new quality), crit buffed, low mana cost, looks badass. What's not to love? Well, besides the annoying delay mechanic, which takes quite a bit of practice to get used to. Best used with Tribal MTX in combination with Vaal Storm Call (rip 16 soul cost) and HoT for maximum Zeus cosplaying. SC - Echo - Chaos - Conc - Crit - LL.

Lightning Tendrils: See Ice Nova. Quality is worse.

Double Cursing with Assassin's and Warlord's Marks means you can drop LL, but makes curse immune maps and mobs annoying. I wouldn't be surprised if Promise gives you enough leech anyway. Throw in Poacher's Mark too since Frenzy Charges will be broken OP.
