“Q: Why not use Cold pen all the time?
A: You can, and its really good, but when you come to do a boss, you have 2 greens, then about the only thing you can put in for GMP is culling strike, and it’s not great. I'm here to freeze bosses and get loot, the boss is currently frozen ^-^ “

I’m very perplexed about this answer. The build seems to be REALY good, and you have made exelent decesions regarding items and passives, but if you self-proclaimed goal is to Freezelock, then why aren’t u using ADDED COLD for higher base DMG? At LVL 20 it’s good 100 base DMG, neting you about 24% MORE DMG in the end. It seems to me that especial against bosses with resist Elemental Damage, droping spell echo or faster cast, and putting in cold pen and added cold with net MUCH longer freeze time. Please test you build and give some feedback!

Hi, I've tested having cold pen in all the time, and it works fine, but to be honest there wasn't a huge difference using cold pen vs Faster casting. I don't have any cast speed on the tree (or on gear at the moment) so 50% increased cast speed makes an insane difference.

The thing is - If I have enough on hit damage to freeze monsters I can either hit them more often and have a shorter freeze time or hit them less often and have a longer freeze time. Both complete the same objective of perma freezing monsters. But without FC or Spell echo, your cast speed is going to be around 1 per second, which makes clearing maps horrible.

Then it comes down to personal preferance, I used faster casting because it just play style smoother and more enjoyable for me.

When it comes to using single target to freeze bosses, if you are using cold pen - you replace elemental prolif for faster casting. In this case I use Added lightning, so it comes down to Added Lightning vs Added cold. For me - I have enough crit mult/damage to shock most mobs, which actually nets me 50% more damage + the lightning damage itself vs say 24% with added cold.

Anyway. this is all pretty much redundant now that I am using the berek's Grip ring and require Added lightning (instead of faster casting) to shock to give me mana leech - which means I hardly need mana pots any more, and will be able to put herald of thunder on my mana as well.

then my gems are
Ice Spear
Crit Damage (45% more damage on crit)
Spell echo (69% more cast speed - and required to sustain mana cost)
Elemental prolif (10% freeze, 15% shock duration and increases safety for party members also means you get much better use from berek's grip as everything is frozen and shocked already before you hit)
Added lightning (50% more damage on crit, also provides 50% more damage for party members, and gives 5% mana leech)
GMP (Can use LMP - but meh, IMO only use it if your damage isn't good enough to use GMP) Swap for cold pen for bosses.

once again I will say - added cold is great, and so is having cold pen in all the time - but just because they are good doesn't mean that other gems don't provide the same bonuses in a different way.

I'm surprised I haven't had anyone say "WHY U NO USE LVL 3/4 EMPOWER IT GIVES DEEPS" yes, it does give damage, but its not better than any of the gems I currently have.
