This game needs right-click driving

In Diablo II, whenever you had a melee skill on your right-click, you could right-click the ground, and you'd move towards that point but stop and attack any monster you ran into along the way. Once the monster was dead, you'd continue to move, fight, and move. It was very fluid; you only had to let go of right-click if you needed to do something different (retreat, feint, whatever). No need to constantly just keep clicking the button.

In Path of Exile, instead if you right-click the ground, your character will run to that spot (right past enemies), and make a melee attack, even if there's nothing there.

It is my heart-felt opinion that the former option is the superior way to handle that particular input. It allows for far less mindless clicking. I realize Path of Exile will probably often involve a little more skill than just constantly hacking and slashing through things, but nonetheless sometimes you get swarmed and it is far more convenient to be able to just right-click and hold it, and fight your way free.

I 100% agree. I think thisis one of the main reaons why marauder is the least played character. I know I will not play melee again until this is fixed.

I think this might be a good way to help increase the use of single target abilities.

Look at most ARPGs and you will find people suggesting AoE based builds over single target ones just because they want to avoid having to pick out each enemy.

I certainly don't think cleave or sweep should work this way but I think for single target abilities it would be nice.

That being said, the game is at a point where it can strike a balance between single target and AoE abilities that makes using single target abilities a more practical way to kill, well, single targets. I think in the long run that's the better solution to making abilities like dual strike and glacial hammer seen as equally viable.
I always used a different technique in D2. Namely left click driving, then using shift to automatically attack anything in range without needing to aim. Currently shift attacking doesn't feel particularly fluid and mellee suffers as a result.
I agree with this 100%.
This is the greatest necro thread ever.
See everyone? Marauders used to be UP!

when i first started playing a marauder i had the same difficulties, i used heavy strike and ground slam as main dps skills

the thing is, path of exile is a skill based game, you can't just install the game and walk arround and own everything, you need to practice and with that u'll become better in it and be able to do the stuff u need to do, do it good and quickly.

for me that makes the game stand out, trying, retrying and then having the satisfaction to master it.

I came up with a suggestion of my own to help alleviate some of the problems with controlling Melee characters here but your suggestion is equally as good as mine, possibly even better. (But has potential to make combat too easy/boring/right-click-to-win)
Computer specifications:
Windows 10 Pro x64 | AMD Ryzen 5800X3D | ASUS Crosshair VIII Hero (WiFi) Motherboard | 16GB 3600MHz RAM | MSI Geforce 1070Ti Gamer | Corsair AX 760watt PSU | Samsung 860 Pro 512GB SSD & WD Black FZEX HDD

Nah, just makes single-target melee attacks not stab-your-eyes-out worthy. Right-click driving with a Frenzy Barb was sheer unadulterated joy. Melee Frenzy in PoE? Not so much. It's missing that human lawnmower feeling :(.
