[2.0] THOR'S RAINBOWNUKE: DO ALL MAPS, UBER ATZIRI, AND EXPLOSIONS!

Absolutely love this guide.
Beautiful GIFS.

Two questions:
1) since Discharge is the main DPS spell, why not use Discharge + Iron Will + Life Leech (sacrificing Arc).
2) any potential for Chaos Inoc?
3) Soul Taker worth losing a spell damage shield?

I am trying your build using Chaos Inoc, and Dual Wield Soul Taker.

You'd also half the damage of discharge this way, since Arc is generating one of the 2 power and endurance charges. So doing that will more than half your DPS.

Versus low-life you'd sacrifice
  • auras on your life pool
  • blood rage's INSANE amount of attack speed on low life
  • Pain Attunement's 30% more spell damage bonus
  • Rise of the Phoenix's ignite immunity on low-life

while you gain a little bit of Energy Shield.

I can assure you, that by being able to run auras on your life, you can use all the 3 element-specific purity auras and become more tanky than the extra ES from CI would make you.

Conclusion:
CI is an option, albeit a bad one. Go for low-life if you can.

No. A Soul Taker would not only make you not have a shield, but it would also decrease your damage. Yes, that's right.
When dual wielding you alternate between your weapons with every attack, so while getting off a bit more attacks per second, only half of your attacks would be with Mjölner and thus you would end up triggering less spells over all.

(There are 2 exceptions: Dual Strike and Cleave. However they are not an option, because they hit so slowly in general compared to the proposed skills in the guide.)

I'd in all cases advise you to use a shield and not dual-wield.

You have a very small amount of strength on your gear. Are you sure you can achieve 412 strength to use Mjölner?

I also recommend getting Doryani's Invitation lightning version as a belt. Your current belt won't augment your damage at all, since this build is purely doing its damage with spells. On top of that the belt I mentioned has built-in leech, which you will need in case you decide to not use Life Leech in your Mjölner.

You took very little ES in your skill tree. On top of that, you took life regeneration near the Marauder start but also chose to take Vaal Pact. That doesn't make much sense to me.

It is, however, possible to go Vaal Pact - you can even sustain RF with the Shav's ring alone if you have above or equal 96% Fire Resistance. That will become hard in maps that have Vulnerability or certain other mods, though. Vaal Pact is only worth it, if you link Life Leech to your spells. If you are just going with Doryani's Invitation's 1% leech, then Vaal Pact is unnecessary.

You also took Iron Grip, which is unnecessary, because the build is not doing any damage with projectile attacks.

It looks like you are trying to make a hybrid between attack based damage and damage through the Mjölner procs - I doubt this is very effective. Usually the best option is to maximize either attack damage or spell damage, unless you run Crown of Eyes. I found, that even with Crown of Eyes, I was better off maximizing my spells' damage and not caring about my attacks' damage.

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING FEEDBACK.
SUPER BUMP
I pretty much concur with every single point.
Exceptional logic. Thank you!

I feel sad though. Is there really no advantage to CI?
All of my gear is best suited for CI. I don't have Shav's or Solarica.

For CI user, Soultaker is needed for the mana costs.

;_; ( i'm crying )

If I wanted to switch to Low-Life, the only piece I need to change is my chest correct?

Yes, you only need a different chest to go low-life. I recommend getting a Shavronne's and not a Solaris Lorica, because your ES would be really low with a Solaris Lorica.

Also don't worry about the mana cost - it is very low. I doubt you need a soul taker to cope with it. Keep in mind, that Romira's Banquet gives you a tiny bit of mana leech already. ;)
You really can go with a shield without worrying much - Rise of the Phoenix if you want to use Righteous Fire, and any high-ES + Spell Damage shield otherwise.

Hmmmm.....
What if I make a super tanky CI variant?
I didn't realize that mana cost would be so manageable (i've been addicted to Soultaker pure melee cyclone builds).

What if I use this tank shield?

I don't want to use snap-shotting.
And, I don't want to buy Shav's at this point.
Based on my existing gear, I prefer to stick with CI, even though it is definitely not ideal.

Updated Chaos Inoc tree:

Given these constraints, what do you suggest boss.
Thanks so much for your advice!

LAST QUESTION!

Does getting additional power charges / endurance charges (from the passive tree) make a difference for this build?

Given you can't change your current gear and class, and are not using Righteous Fire, then I would suggest the following tree.

You should run discipline + 2 of the 3 element purity auras on your mana pool, depending on which monsters are in the area you will be doing.

In general, the Duelist is about the second-worst class for this build (Ranger is the worst), essentially wasting 8 nodes to get onto the main path. Despite you having evasion on your gear, I decided to not put another 8 points just to get Iron Reflexes. Yes - this way the evasion you have is "wasted", but CwDT + Immortal Call should take care of the physical damage while your high elemental resistances and the block chance I took should take care of the rest.

I also suggest taking a high-ES + Spell Damage shield, rather than the shield you linked. Armor is not that important with this build, and with a decent titanium spirit shield you can get 600+ ES and 70+ Spell Damage, while even having more block.

They don't make a difference, since most of the time you won't have more than 3 charges.

Tom94, you are GGG
thanks!

Interesting twist on the defensive mechanic. I didn't realize that the immortal calls would be that reliable despite constant discharges expending the pool of endurance charges.
As such, this certainly allows for an unexpected approach towards armor mitigation.

I will give this a go.
Thanks!

After a night of zero sleep, I read over your advice and spent quite a few regret orbs. Here is my revamped skill tree. I also acquired a Doryani Invitation lightning belt (and it's made a HUGE difference).
Also, I dropped soultaker and replaced with a pure defensive shield (unfortunately without spell damage).

My rationale for these changes is to become more tanky, rather than have insane DPS. As such, this is my variant of your build. DPS is garbage indeed. But ES and armor is quite good, and it's Chaos Inoc (so jungle valley becomes bathroom break).

(also, regarding some of the wierd nodes with life regen, I took them for the +20 strength).

P.S.
Your comment about the endurance charges providing perma Immortal Call inspired me to propose a different build.

What do you think about a Soultaker/Sword dual wield cyclone with Voll's Devotion + Romira's Banquet + Resolute Technique. It would achieve perma Power charges and generate Endurance charges via Cold Snap (on CWDT), in order to fuel unlimited Immortal Calls.
